Scarceta

Scarceta is one of the most important prehistoric settlements of the Fiora valley. Located on a travertine outcrop near the right bank of the river, it spans nearly six hectares. Founded in the Middle Bronze Age, its history lasted for eight centuries until it was halted shortly before the appearance of the Etruscans. Through a series excavations between 1970 and 1996, Scarceta was found to be composed of several groups of huts separated by empty spaces along with evidence of artisan craftmanship using bronze, bone, and horns. One of the most important finds is a large elliptical hut (over 20 m in length) which was proved to be a workshop complete with materials in various states of completion. The hut and its remnants are now on display in the Manciano Museum of Prehistory.
