Once the centre of social life in ancient Rome, the Roman Forum is today one of the most important sights of the city.
If you are interested in ancient Rome, you cannot miss the Roman Forum. It was the central marketplace of the „Eternal City“ around which temples, administrative buildings, market halls and many other buildings were grouped. Once a marshy area, it was drained in the 7th century BC. In the course of time, more and more buildings were added. Today, only ruins remain of most of the structures, which lie close together on the vast site.
Some of the most famous sights:
- Via Sacra: the main street of the Forum
- Temple of Vesta: priestesses kept the sacred fire here
- Temple of Saturn: important temple where the treasury of Rome was kept
- Arch of Titus: triumphal arch of Emperor Titus
- Arch of Septimius Severus: triumphal arch at the western end of the Forum
- Curia Iulia: the Senate building in ancient Rome
It is worth booking a guided tour or following an audio guide to visit the Roman Forum. Many ruins seem unremarkable at first glance, but have fascinating stories to tell
The best view of the Roman Forum is from the Palatine Hill right next door – the hill itself, with its palace ruins, is also worth a visit!
