Römervilla

In 1934, the first remnants of a Roman villa rustica were discovered at the foot of the Tegelberg – an extensive estate that was founded around the middle of the 2nd century AD. Further significant finds came to light in 1966 during the construction of the valley station of the Tegelberg cable car and in 1996 during the work on the summer toboggan run.
The complex is among the most impressive testimonies of Roman settlement in the Alpine foothills.
A distinctive feature of the villa rustica was the private bath, as was quite common in rural Roman estates. Outstanding is the hypocaustum, the Roman underfloor heating system: hot air was generated in a hollow space beneath the floor and circulated through tube-shaped bricks in the walls upwards. This sophisticated heating system provided a pleasant indoor climate and demonstrates the high technical level of Roman architecture.
Particular attention was drawn to the fragments of colored wall plaster that were recovered during the excavations. Despite the collapse of the building, many of these frescoes remained exceptionally well preserved and could be successfully restored. They offer a fascinating insight into the design of Roman interiors and have made the Roman villa known far beyond Bavaria.
