Bei den archäologischen Untersuchungen in Molzbichl konnte das älteste Kloster Kärntens nachgewiesen werden. Es entstand im Zuge der Missionierung durch Tassilo III. im späteren 8. Jahrhundert. Die Klosterkirche wurde in ihrer Dimension von 24 x 8 m in Österreich nur vom zeitgleichen Salzburger Virgildom übertroffen. Südlich des Gotteshauses lag die Kloster-anlage, von der ebenfalls Reste erhalten geblieben sind. Schon im 6. Jahrhundert hatte im Raum Molzbichl der Diakon und Heilige Nonnosus gewirkt. Die einzige erhaltene Inschrift des 6. Jahrhunderts in Österreich nennt den 103 Jahre alt gewordenen Heiligen mit Todestag 2. September. Von der prächtigen Innenausstattung des Sakralbaues haben sich zahlreiche Reste aus Marmor erhalten.
Die über 70 Flechtwerksteine stellen den bedeutendsten Fundkomplex dieser Kunstgattung im gesamten Südostalpenraum dar. Im 9./10. Jahrhundert zog die geistliche Gemeinschaft ab, das Klostergebäude wurde abgetragen und der frei gewordene Platz als Friedhof genutzt. Im 11. Jahrhundert war das Gotteshaus im Besitz der mächtigen Eppensteinersippe. Ihre Eigenkirche lag im Orte Munstiure , der auch Molzbichl genannt wird. Die Bezeichnung Munstiure=Münster=Kloster erinnert noch an die einstige Anwesenheit der geistliche Gemeinschaft. Die Grabungen wurden vom Verein Historisches Molzbichl durchgeführt.
