Von der Burg zur Wehrkirche.
Die im Kern romanische Kirche aus dem 9. oder 10. Jahrhundert war vermutlich Teil der 1163 erstmals erwähnten Burg Tiffen. Von ihr sind nur einige Mauerreste im Bereich der heutigen Mariengrotten südlich des Friedhofs erhalten geblieben, zu der man nur zu Fuß spazieren kann. Im 15. Jahrhundert wurde das Gotteshaus selbst zur Wehrkirche ausgebaut. Aus dieser Zeit ist ein teilweise abgetragener Rundturm mit Schießscharten erhalten geblieben. Das Kriegsfresko auf der Außenwand der Kirche stammt vom 1943 verstorbenen Maler und Holzschneider Switbert Lobisser. Er stammte aus Tiffen und galt zur Zeit des NS-Regimes als bekanntester Kärntner Künstler.
