Das Amphitheater war Ort des Vergnügens und der Unterhaltung, hatte aber auch gesellschaftlich eine wichtige Funktion: hier wurde den Besuchern immer wieder die Macht Roms vor Augen geführt.

Zudem war der Zuschauerraum ein Abbild der Gesellschaftsstruktur – den Zuschauerinnen und Zuschauern war abhängig vom Stand ein fester Bereich zugeordnet. Dabei galt, je weiter unten man saß, desto höher die Standeszugehörigkeit.
