Typische Fossilien am Kerenzerberg

Entlang des Geophänomene-Weges von Habergschwänd bis zum Talalpsee (ca. 2km) finden sich Gesteine mit einem Altersunterschied von bis zu 100 Millionen Jahren. Alle entstanden als Ablagerungen auf dem Boden eines Meeres. Die meisten von ihnen sind Kalkgesteine. An verschiedenen Orten enthalten sie versteinerte ehemalige Meeresbewohner. 

Assilinen sind einzellige, linsenförmige Wassertierchen, deren kalkige Schale ein System von vielen spiralförmig aufgebauten Kammern bildet. Diese versteinerten Tierchen sind vernatwortlich für die vielen weisslichen Flecken im sogenannten "Assilinengrünsandstein".

Assilinen gehören zu den Nummuliten oder Grossforaminiferen, die für den geologischen Zeitabschnitt des Tertiärs charakteristisch sind. Das Tertiär begann vor 65 und endete vor 2 Millionen Jahren. Zu Beginn des Tertiärs sind neben den Sauriern die meisten Arten ausgestorben. Dieses Massenaussterben gibt Forschern ein Rätsel auf und wird nach heutigen Erkenntnissen mit einem Meteoriteneinschlag in Verbindung gebracht.

Eine Assilinengattung lebt noch heute im Roten Meer.

Mit dem Postauto von Bahnhof Näfels-Mollis nach Filzbach Sportzentrum, von dort mit der Sesselbahn Kerenzerberg bis zur Bergstation Habergschwänd. Von dort einfach dem Geophänomene-Weg in Richtung Talalpsee folgen. Den Grünsandstein finden Sie ca. nach einem Kilometer auf halber Strecke bis zum Talalpsee.
