No other city is as closely associated with the Reformation as Lutherstadt an der Elbe. According to tradition, Luther posted his 95 theses against the sale of indulgences on the portal of the castle church here on 31 October 1517. To this day, the castle church with its famous theses door, the homes of Luther and Melanchthon, the town church as Luther's preaching centre and the Cranach Courtyards remain stone witnesses to an impressive era.
