Pilgrim walks in Castrillón

The Camino del Norte (also called the Coastal Route) leads us from the French/Spanish border at the Bay of Biscay along the northern coast of Spain westward, and then joins the Camino Francés just before Santiago.

This stage finally leaves the urban surroundings behind and leads through rural areas dotted with small villages. From Avilés, after walking through the town, the route briefly returns to the sea at Salinas, then continues towards San Martín de Laspra. The official Camino was modified in 2018 to pass through Piedras Blancas. However, it is still not fully adapted, and you must walk along the shoulder of the AS-320 for a little over one kilometer. This way leads to Santiago del Monte (Santiagu’l Monte) and later to Soto del Barco (Sotu’l Barcu), where you must cross the very narrow estuary of the Nalón River. On the other side, the stage ends in Muros de Nalón. Some pilgrims prefer to continue to El Pito and from there take a detour off the Camino to spend the night in Cudillero.

I followed the route according to the Outdoor hiking guide. I chose many alternatives that were well described in the guide.
