On this new stage of the Portuguese Coastal Way, you’ll leave Baiona behind and begin to enter the Vigo estuary, whose seabed hides Spanish galleons laden with gold from the Americas, and where, according to Jules Verne, the Nautilus made a stop. In the distance, you’ll see the Cíes Islands, a natural park of great ornithological value. You’ll pass the beautiful O Pombal fountain, cross the Romanesque bridges of A Groba and A Ramallosa, and in Nigrán, you can visit the impressive architecture of the Templo Votivo do Mar. At the end of the stage, you’ll reach the gateway to Vigo, the largest city in Galicia and its economic and industrial engine. Don’t miss the O Areal area and Plaza de Compostela, where you can admire some remarkable modernist buildings, the old town (Casco Vello), and the Mercado da Pedra, famous for its oysters.

After leaving Oia, a path along stunning cliffs awaits you, leading to the beautiful Cabo Silleiro lighthouse, a true landmark of this straight coastal stretch. From there, you’ll ascend toward Baredo and then immediately begin your descent into Baiona, the port where Columbus’s ships arrived to announce the “discovery” of America. You can visit a replica of the La Pinta caravel, and also explore the Monterreal Castle, now a Parador hotel. One thing is certain: this small town, now one of Galicia’s top tourist destinations, won’t disappoint you.
