Jakobswege pursue one goal: Santiago de Compostela. Early pilgrims started the journey from their doorstep and then used a network of paths that should lead them there as quickly as possible. These were usually today's "old paths" such as Roman roads, trade routes, military or escort roads. Safe hostels were in monasteries or towns. This path, marked with the international blue-yellow scallop shell, leads exactly 200 kilometers from Franconian Ansbach/St. Gumbertus to today’s Württemberg Ellwangen and further south through the Kocher and Brenz valleys to Ulm or Oberdischingen, the seat of the Swabian Jakobus Society.
