Pilgrim walks in Aia

The Camino del Norte (also called the Coastal Route) leads us from the French/Spanish border at the Bay of Biscay along the northern Spanish coast westwards and then joins the Camino Francés shortly before Santiago.

We start the Camino de Santiago from San Sebastián on a stage where the sea will always be our backdrop. Leaving the city behind, the Way takes us up to Mount Igueldo, crowned by the Torreón, a 180-metre-high tower built in the 18th century as a lighthouse. If you think this is a tough start and prefer to enjoy the steep yet beautiful descent to Orio, you can always take the funicular, which has been in operation for over a hundred years. Once in Orio, don’t miss the Camino de Santiago Interpretation Centre. The stage ends in Zarautz, another town closely linked to the sea. From here, the Nao Victoria departed — the first ship to sail around the world.

Irun-Bilbao-Santander-Gijon-SDC-Muxia-Fisterra My Way of St. James 2016 via SDC to Fisterra Walked in 37 days A few very small sections are missing in the GPX. This happened when I forgot to record. I followed the route according to the Outdoor hiking guide. I chose many alternatives that were well described in the guide.

A varied day, setting off with sunrise through the morning mists, visiting churches and cathedrals, medieval roads, swimming in the sea, and watching the sun set.
