The Neudorf historic mining circular hiking trail has existed since 1992 and is one of the most beautiful hiking trails in Neudorf. It leads to the most interesting witnesses of Neudorf’s mining history, through partly beautiful forest areas with the typical flora and fauna of the Harz, but also over idyllic forest meadows and hollow paths. At the forest edges, you are often rewarded with beautiful views. The mining circular hiking trail is marked with a blue circle and is 15 km long. Its most important points include the Teufelsteich, the Biewender old mining area, the Lange Graben, the Fürst Viktor adit mouth, the dam of the old smelting railway, the Birnbaumteich, the Hellergrund and its wheel chambers, the Glasebach mining museum, the Birnbaum shafts, the Pfaffenberg, and the Stahlquelle. The Hellergrund at Birnbaumteich is the oldest mining area in the Neudorf surroundings. Since the 13th century, ore was mined at Birnbaumteich, first in open pits, later underground. To bring the breadth of ore mining closer to Neudorf residents and all interested guests, a nature trail was established in Hellergrund at Birnbaumteich by ABM workers. Behind the entrance to the Birnbaumteich holiday park, there is a rest area in the direction of Straßberg. From there, the footpath leads past mining pits, open pits, and shafts amidst a magnificent forest to the wheel house and wheel chamber as well as a pond. Paths have been laid out, bridges built, seating areas and crossings created. Hellergrund has become a worthwhile excursion destination (nature trail) highly recommended for all mine and hiking enthusiasts.
