We completed the whole hike and it was an amazing experience. Beautiful scenery and experiencing local culture and food in guest houses. I would really recommend it. GPX really helps as well as having a detailed msp where other paths can be seen. Reasonable experience in navigation is needed.

Respect! In KOMOVI NATURE PARK, on the route of the First Montenegrin Transversal CT1, at the foot of Kučki Kom, I am the owner of a cabin that has served mountaineers and all other visitors as a shelter and overnight stay all these years ago, and God willing, in the future. The cabin is open and accessible to all visitors. It is listed on the map as a mountain hut. Visitors can, if they wish and are able, donate a symbolic amount, which would help me keep the hut functional, and would also contribute to extending its lifespan. Here are the payment instructions: Account with institution: HBBAMEPGXXX Beneficiary customer: ME25520036000002970937 POPOVIC MLADEN, MEDUN BB, PODGORICA, MONTENEGRO For all information you can contact me the owner: Mladen Popović +38267660054 mladenmpop@gmail.com Best Regards !

Gorgeous trail, extremenly adventurous and diverse. I did a thru-hike between August and October of 2021 and have shared some insights, experiences and GPS tracks on this page: https://www.balkanize-me.eu/ I had many insecurities when I started and was grateful for other hikers' advice. Feel free to reach out to me - I'm very happy to pay it forward!

I’ve noticed that a lot of the reviews are done by thru hikers which is great but if you’re looking to spend a week to 10 days on the Via Dinarica and don’t want to carry all your camping gear then I can definitely recommend hiking from Lake Blidinje to Umoljani staying in a combination of Mountain Huts and towns. Along the way I crossed the Cvirnisca and the Prenj Mountains. Had a swim in Lake Boracko and visited the mountain village of Lukomir. So many highlights in just one week! I was able to use taxis from bigger towns to connect to my start and finish points. Hiking without camping gear did commit me to some pretty long hiking days across difficult terrain so probably not for the inexperienced. My over night stops were Plasa Hut (Vilinac is better located but was closed), Jablanica, Meduprenje Hut, Rujiste, Lake Boracko and Lukomir before finishing in Umoljani. While camping gets you closer to nature being able to stay in accommodation meant I was able to meet some really interesting locals and was able to enjoy a hot meal and hot shower on most nights. I spent a lot of time planning this trip but really pleased how it all worked out. The Via Dinarica is not just for the Svens and Eva’s but with a bit of logistical planning can be a great walk for middle aged full time workers with kids. 🤪

VD White Trail Montengro What a pleasure it has been! Montenegro embraced us with stunning mountains, deep and steep canyons, vast plains and delicious blue berries. We enjoyed every bit of it and would definitely recommend this part of the VD WT. Thanks to all the volunteers for their work! NOTES: - We hiked the Via Dinarica White Trail only in Montenegro, SOBO, in September 2021 - In general the trail is well marked, but a GPX is still advised as a guideline for parts where you have to search for signs more. At times the GPX deviates from the markings, but nothing too serious and they always come together. - This trail crosses at unofficial border points. - We crossed the BiH-MNE border after Brod (near Foca). From Brod it is around 30 km on asphalt to Piva HE (where you are on the trail again). When we were there the road was quiet and especially in MNE rather beautiful. - We crossed the MNE-AL border 8 km east of Vermosh (official). For the MNE-AL-RKS border you can apply for a permit to cross through the mountain peaks. More information here: http://www.peaksofthebalkans.com/Cross-Border-Procedures - It would be nice if also this last bit of the VD would get a separate section here in OA, so that more specific feedback can be given. - As it is not possible to add waypoints to the route in OA, we added POI (such as waterpoints, rest areas etc) directly in OSM (through maps.me) PRACTICALITIES: - Food: we got resupplies in: Brod (BiH)- Zabljak - Mojkovac - Andrijevica (off route) - Vermosh (very small shop) - Water: we had no distance over 20 km without watersources. However, we had a filter with us. We would recommend to take one, since there is a lot of cattle. - Sleeping: we mainly did wild camps. There are beautiful lakes along the trail. There are also options for paid accommodations. All mountain huts were closed on the days we were there.

I hiked the VD White Trail from 20.7 to 3.9.2021. Did 3 weeks with my girlfriend and the rest alone. Hiked Northbound, skipped around 100km by bus/train at stages wich are considered only road walking. I really loved the diversity of landscapes and the quietness in the mountains. Especially in Bosnia and Montenegro you won't meet many hikers. One the whole VD you will find good places for (wild) camping and some really nice shelters (especially in Croatia), and also cheap accommodation. You can buy (basic) food latest every 3 days. Sometimes I just asked in restaurants to buy bread. People were really welcoming and helpful. Water can be a bit complicated in Velebit. Bring purification (I had pills). On some days I carried up to 5 litres but mostly 3 is enough. Be prepared for all kind of weather. Had temperatures between 6 and 42 °C. The single stages got updated. Don't download the whole White Trail. It's old. Downsides: -Sometimes some (dangerous and annoying) road walking. -especially in north Croatia unmaintened and overgrown trails -sometimes no markings. I packed really light (base weight of 4.5KG), walked without a stove. Used 2 pairs of Trailrunners (Topo Ultraventure, Altra Lone Peak) My hiking days mostly were quite long (12 or more hours) and up to 50km. Mostly around 35. Therefore I had some zero days to relax. As an average hiker (did a lot of trekking tours but only to 400km) I found the trail quite exhausting im parts. Remember that you are hiking in the mountains. In conclusion this is an awesome opportunity to get to know the nature and culture of the less known countries in europe. No mass tourism at all. Sometimes there are small annoyances, but nothing you could not deal with. With some route changing, trail marking, maintenance and promotion this could be a real alternative to the more known long distance hiking trails. If you are fine with navigating with GPS and can live with the downsides it already is an alternative.

Uhh what can I say, Via Dinarica😃 I solo thru-hiked (SoBo) whole trail from May to August 2021 with my dog Piki. It was really hard, but amazing experience. Slovenian part was ok, just soooo much of road walking (did the updated stage in Slovenia, not the one on this map). Trail in some parts doesn't even exist, especially in the north of Croatia. Then when when you enter Velebit it's really beautiful, marked good and you can sleep in amazing shelters. Unfortunatelly there are many immigrants in Croatia and they can be aggressive as well (especially around Senj). So be carefull, especially if you are a solo hiking woman. At the end it's a lot of road walk on burning sun.🙁 Bosnia is beautiful, but many times marked really poor. It was really exhausting to follow the trail, because they say don't go of the trail because of mine fields. Mine fields are another big question, I was so confused where mines are and where aren't. When you see a sign you don't even know for which part is it and it happened so many times that there was a sign for mine field at the end of if (so just for hikers hiking in opposite direction). Trails in Montenegro and Albania were much better, I think I didn't get lost not even once. 😅 My opinion is that this trail is NOT finished yet, there are some parts that really need to be fixed for example on Prenj gpx tracks lead you to a cliff, at the end of trail you walk out of Valbona by the road to a specific restaurant (what's the point of this?), some trails don't even exist and you need to take the others... So yeah in overview, if you want to go on a big adventure, where many times trails won't be signed good, some of them will be overgrown or won't even exist, you are ready to hike alone most of the time, ready to have problems with communication if you don't speak Serbian/Croatian (no one speaks english), prepared to hike some long sections on the road, then this trail is for you :) but just get ready for some screams of desperation😅 You will have great views, many great spots to camp, amazing shelters in Croatia, very good food in guesthouses in BiH (great coffee as well) and MNE. And it was amazing to be able to pee everywhere without hiding, because there was no one😅😅😅😅. Also of course it was more challenging because I was hiking with a dog (searching for a dog food, places to sleep that are pet friendly, attacks from village dogs especially in Bosnia...).

We hiked the Via Dianarica in September/October 2020 and we really enjoyed the wilderness, lovely people and there hospitality, good food along the trail. Bad heather periods we used to get known a bit more the culture and some villages/cities of these mostly unknown balkan countries - we will definitely come back! If you're looking for an adventure without overcrowded trails, sometimes no or overgrown trails then you will love it. If you're looking for clean trails, open huts, partys, perfect trail markings, then your're maybe wrong. Some experiences: There are many overgrown paths, mainly in North Croatia, so we sometimes bypassed these sections on (gravel) roads. The Velebit section is one of the Via Dinarica highlight. After the Velebit to the Bosnian border there are about 200km roads and gravel roads. It's the Dinara between which is really worth, hope there will be an alternative route in future. The Bosnian part is very vell maintained due to a UNDP project. We loved the hospitality and the warmth of the local people. Montenegro enchants with its huge plateaus. In October the days are getting short and temperatures got really cold, so we couldn't climb the highest peak in Albania anymore. For further information you're welcome to contact us (www.wurzelkocher.ch).

To so pripombe glede aplikacije in same poti.

    Guillaume ...
    June 26, 2019
I've hiked the Via Dinarica white trail during 5 weeks (late june to early august 2019), from Krivi Put in Croatia (as advised by Eva) and stopped due to time schedule after Prenj (Bosnia-i-Herzegovina). TLDR: I loved it! I am a 35yo french guy travelling alone. I have never felt unsafe on this trip. I have seen no bear, no wolf, only 1 or 2 poskok, 2 or 3 thicks. The main dangers were: - lack of water: every shelter had water. else if you spot a ruin, they generally have an old water reservoir (not indicated on the map), finally you can ask people living in the area. Be aware that in summer the springs located on the map are generally dry!! Rule of thumb: have a filter and a 6 meters light rope, and be ready to carry up to 3 liters some days. - heatstroke: in the worst cases I had to stop hiking at noon and resume at 6pm - wind: the 'bora' can be nasty - getting lost: you can't hike the Via Dinarica without a good GPS (a tough phone with GPS and Glonass worked for me) because you will often get lost (e.g overgrown paths that are not visible anymore) During my hike I've met only 4 Via Dinarica hikers. Two going south: a german guy, a friendly retired man from USA, and 2 going north from Albania: an australian guy, a 20yo young czech woman. Nobody seemed traumatized like Vladimir (see previous comment), they were enjoying. Via Dinarica is not easy, it is adventure, far from tourist areas, and this is exactly what I loved. Landscapes have been gorgeous, every one I've met has been super friendly and most of the time with a perfect english! I loved the feeling in the quiet remote villages, out-of-time, self-sufficient, so peaceful. The only thing I really disliked (and this was shared among the other hikers) is that some section include a looooot of hiking on road... which is so boring even if the surroundings are beautiful. (South bound) My advice is to hike the croatian section from Krivi Put to Gračac (it includes Velebit, Paklenica), then take public transports and resume hiking around Mrkodol/Bukovica in BiH. Cheers! :-) (instagram: sulpeb)
