Nicht nur wegen der lebendigen sorbischen Kultur ist Bautzen eine Reise wert. Einst bedeutsamer als Dresden, erlangte die Stadt in der jüngeren Vergangenheit hauptsächlich durch "Stasi-Gefängnis" und politische Verfolgung traurige Berühmtheit. Fast 18 Jahre nach der Wiedervereinigung zeigt sich die Stadt jedoch von einer ganz anderen Seite. Die Altstadt ist hervorragend saniert, zahlreiche kleine Läden, Cafés oder Restaurants laden zum Bummeln und Verweilen ein. Zudem ist sie Ausgangspunkt für Ausflüge ins Oberlausitzer Bergland, Zittauer Gebirge, nach Tschechien oder in die Oberlausitzer Heide- und Teichlandschaft mit Unesco-Biosphärenreservat.
