The Turtmanntal is one of the quieter valleys in the Valais. Occupied only in the summer, there are no towns here, just two hotels for walkers in the hamlet of Gruben/Meiden, most of whom are doing the Haute Route, and one small store. There is essentially only one place to stay, and that is the Hotel Schwarzhorn.
The Schwarzhorn is not a fancy inn, and has more of a utilitarian feel, but they have everything hiker's need... private rooms, large dorms, hot showers, filling meals, and a nice outdoor patio. They even have a small store selling picnic supplies and hiking basics. This is always a regular stop on our Haute Route tours. It's a great valley, and staying here 2 nights is perfectly reasonable to have more time explore and to rest up for the big passes.
