Spitalalm

A road that is accessible all year round leads right up to the alpine house at 1,320 m above sea level, where you can enjoy sweeping views of the upper Mur Valley amidst pastures and forests.

The house, over 200 years old and built with stone walls, was tastefully renovated in 1998 while preserving its original character.

Experience the awakening of spring on the alpine pasture with a walk, when the cuckoo calls from the forest and the unique alpine flora slowly comes back to life after a long winter. Around this time, our beloved cows also move to their holiday home on the mountain pastures surrounding the Spitalalm.

From autumn onwards, hikes in the fresh mountain air are accompanied by the vibrant colours of our forests. And on many often mild October and November days, a breathtaking sea of fog adorns the extended Indian summer on the alpine pasture.

During the summer months, collecting berries, herbs, and mushrooms in the surrounding forest – depending on vegetation – can enrich your menu.
Various hiking options lead to the Steinplan, the Gaberl, or the Oskar Schauer House/Sattelhaus (approx. 3 hours). In just about 60 minutes on marked hiking trails, you can reach the alpine hut at Steinplan, open from mid-May – an absolute culinary insider tip among many hikers and mountain bikers in our region, not to mention the stunning panoramic views from the summit cross.

In winter, some of our four-legged friends – like sheep, calves, or pigs – spend the cold months in the barn next to the Spitalalm, where helping with feeding is gladly welcomed by the farmer upon request.
