The Vallemaggia is the largest valley in the Italian-speaking part of Switzerland and is named after the crystal-clear river that has been flowing through the valley for centuries. It is a very lively yet traditional valley and has its charm during all four seasons. It is very green and the dense forests provide shade in the lower parts of the valley in summer, which makes walking pleasant even on hot days. In autumn it is an explosion of colours. Especially the Valle di Lodano, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, becomes a real natural spectacle. The Vallemaggia, or Maggia Valley as it is called in English, stretches from Ponte Brolla to Cavergno. There are also three side valleys: the Rovana Valley with the famous Walser village of Bosco Gurin, the historic Bavona Valley and the Val Lavizzara with the Narèt reservoir, which forms the end of the valley. Each of these side valleys is very different from the others and has its own characteristics. Over 700 km of hiking trails are leading from the river bank, which attracts countless bathers in the warm months, to the highest glacier of Ticino, the Basòdino. Gentle walks through the typical Ticino villages, steep rock faces or multi-day tours through high alpine terrain make Vallemaggia a boundless hiking paradise for nature lovers, families and adventure seekers.
