Fjällräven Classic Pilot event

Quick guide to Fjällräven Classic Chile Pilot event

Safety Tag. To identify you as a participant in Fjällräven Classic Chile, the Safety Tag should be attached to the top of your backpack. The Safety Tag also serves as an aid to attract attention in the event of an emergency.

Trekking Passport. You should carry the Trekking Passport during the hike. A volunteer will note your start and finish times in your passport. At each checkpoint you will have to get your Trekking Passport stamped. At the finish, your passport will be checked for all checkpoint stamps.

The Route. The route you walk along is a well-marked trail. The first day, the route is marked with blue sticks. On some points, there is a Fjällräven Classic sign with an arrow. Follow it. You are responsible for navigation along the route. At the registration you will receive a voucher to Outdooractive.com and are asked to download the route map to your phone, please do so as it contains a lot of important information about the trek. You can use the map and get your position even when the phone is in flight mode or have no connection. Please always have your map and compass or GPS-Track at hand and ensure you are on the right trail. Inside the National Park there will be no Fjällräven Classic signs but the trails are well marked and there are signs showing you in which direction to walk.

Food and Gas. You may pick up food and gas at the check-in at the Volkanica store on Tuesday. Refill of food and gas is possible at Night camp 2 Paine Grande and Night camp 4 Las Torres Central. To reduce the amount of waste, Fjällräven invites participants to share fuel along the way.

Cooking. Outside of the National Park you are allowed to use your stove everywhere. Inside of the National Park you are only allowed to use your stove at the Night Camps, at Camp Italiano (Checkpoint 4) and halfway up to Base de Torres at Refugio Chileno on day 5. If you want to have a hot meal on other spots than mentioned above, you need to boil water and store it in a thermos to be used with your freeze-dried meal. At the Night Camps in the National Park (Camp 2 and 3) you are only allowed to cook inside of the designated cooking areas under roof (Quinchos). In Las Torres Central Campsite (Camp 4 and 5) you are allowed to cook anywhere in the campsite.

Checkpoints. At every checkpoint you will find Fjällräven Classic volunteers and the Checkpoints are open from 9 am until all participants have passed. It is your responsibility to get your Trekking Passport stamped by a volunteer. In case of emergency the volunteers may have to leave the checkpoint. In this case the stamp will be placed outside the tent, and you will stamp your Trekking Passport yourself.

Accommodation/Camping. You pick your own spot for pitching your tent at Night camp 1. At the Night camps inside the National Park, campsite 2, 3 and 4, you will be given a Camping spot. Please bring your Passport and Immigration paper if you are from outside of Chile and your ID if you are Chilean.

Waste Handling and Littering. You should collect all your waste produced during the hike in the Fjällräven Classic Trash Bag, which can be emptied at Night Camp 1 and at the finish. It is absolutely prohibited to litter or leave waste along the trail and at the Night camps in the National Park. There will be bins at Night Camp 2, 3 and 4 but please don’t use these, bring all your trash with you to the finish. The camps in the National Park are remote and the trash handling requires a lot of recourses. We do not want to contribute to that.

Try to use the toilets available at Start, Night Camp 1 and at the Refugio’s along the route. If nature calls when you’re far from a toilet: Dig a small hole. Relieve yourself. Cover the hole with earth. Do not bury the toilet paper, instead, put the toilet paper in a doggy bag and take it with you to the next bin. Never relieve yourself in or close to a water source.

Hygiene. When we sweat, bacteria grow and impairs the surface of the skin. Avoid getting blisters between your buttocks, in your arm pits and on your feet by washing these areas every day. In the National Park it is not allowed to go swimming in the lakes, wash at the campsites.

Water. Drinking water is to be found in streams and tarns along the hike. Avoid water from small pools of still water. Also avoid water that comes from glaciers which contains a lot of sediments.

Sunrise and Sunset. At the end of October, the sun rises approximately at 6:25 am and sets at 8:45 pm.

Safety & Medical Care. The majority of Fjällräven Classic Chile’s route has no cell phone coverage and no access for land vehicles. In case of an injury or illness you have to contact the officials at a checkpoint or night camp. If you cannot proceed to the next checkpoint or night camp, please sit tight on the trail (pitch tent and cook if needed) until help arrives or sweeper appears.

The route has normally no difficult or dangerous passages but there are some steep parts. Be careful in foggy conditions and during or after heavy rainfall as it will result in slippery ground. Remember to eat and drink plenty to gain enough energy and to avoid headaches.

Use good hygiene when dealing with wounds. Use plenty of clean water to rinse wounds and blisters.

First aid educated staff will be present at each night camp and at the finish. They are equipped with a limited amount of first aid products and medications.

In exceptional cases, such as serious injury/illness helicopter evacuation is possible. Medical services and/or helicopter transportation in case of an accident, personal injury or other damage are not included and the associated costs will not be borne by the organizer but will be billed directly to the participant according to the customary rates. All participants are solely responsible for having adequate health insurance covering emergency medical care and transportation.

In case of emergency, call or text Stjepan Pavicic who is responsible for the safety in the organization. His number is: +56 9 9817 8286, please save this to your phone. Inform him of who you are, where you are and what problem/injury you have.

Abandoning the Hike. If you decide to abandon the hike you will still need to walk to the night camp of that day. If you abandon the hike, you are obliged to contact the staff at a Checkpoint or a Night Camp.

Time Limit. The checkpoints along the route are open from 9 am until the last participant has passed. You must reach every night camp throughout the event by 7pm at the latest. The finish in Las Torres Central closes at 6 pm on Sunday, 29 October.

Trekkers Inn. At the finish you will find food and drinks at Trekkers Inn at the finish line, at the Refugio Central and at Hotel Las Torres.

Trash Bag. One of the most important principles when out in nature is to take all your rubbish with you, and preferably some more that you find on the trail.

Contact Telephone Number. If you abandon the trek or if you need to contact the organizer, contact Stjepan Pavicic if you abandon the trek:

+56 9 9817 8286.
