Understanding Map Symbols
If you love planning your route hut-to-hut, peak-to-peak, or pub-to-pub, the interactive map icons make it easier than ever. On this page, we'll break down what each map icon means and how to use them.
Interacting with the map
Both OpenStreetMap (OSM) and Outdooractive maps offer several ways to interact with them.
- Click (on the web) or tap and hold (in the app) anywhere on the map: A small window pops up showing the location description, elevation, and coordinates for that point.
- Click on a map icon: A small window pops up with a link to the associated POI (if one exists on the platform).
Further actions are possible:
- opens the Route Planner
- sets the selected point automatically as destination (Point B) in the route
Displays all available coordinate systems, with the option to copy them with a single click. In the app, this feature also shows how far the selected point is from your current location.
- Lets you share the selected point.
- If the icon is linked to a POI with additional information, an enhanced sharing feature is available.
- In the app, you can share the point through any installed, compatible app.
The app lets you start a new plan or add the selected point to an existing one.
Good to know

- This interactive feature is available in the map, the Route Finder, and the Route Planner.

Interaction with the snow layer
The map with the activated snow layer
Just click a point on the map, and the snow depth will appear right next to your selected point. The familiar window with the location description, elevation, and coordinates will also open, along with the three action options.
This feature is included in the Pro+ subscription.
