The watch app for iOS

With the Watch App for iOS, you can view your position on the map, record tracks, and check your tracking data.To use the Watch App, you need to install the app on both your smartphone and your watch, and be logged in to your account on both devices.

How does the Apple Watch App work?

The Apple Watch App for iOS works via Remote Control.

Remote Control means your Apple Watch and iPhone are connected and mirror each other. For example, you can start track recording on your Watch or on your iPhone, and both devices will show the same information.

This way, you can easily view your tracking data on your Watch while hiking or cycling—without having to take your phone out of your pocket.

Pairing the Apple Watch with your iPhone

To use the Watch App together with your iPhone, the two devices first need to be paired. Please follow these steps for your iOS device and Apple Watch:

  1. Make sure the Apple Watch app is installed on your iPhone and place both devices next to each other.
  2. Turn on Bluetooth and Wi‑Fi on both devices.
  3. Open the Apple Watch app and start the pairing process.
  4. Follow the instructions shown on your devices.
  5. Your devices should now be synchronized.

Once paired, you can decide which apps are available on your Watch:

  1. Open the Watch app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap “My Watch.”
  3. Scroll to the app you’d like to add and tap “Install.”

Displaying the map and your position on the watch

The map selected on your iPhone is also displayed on your Apple Watch. You can view it in full-screen mode, pan it, and zoom in and out using the small wheel. Your GPS position is also displayed. You can also use your phone to switch between different map layers and styles which includes information such as slope angles and weather. This information will then be mirrored on your Apple Watch.

Remember: The Apple Watch can only call up and update new map sections if it is paired with your iPhone and online.

Starting, stopping, and displaying tracks

You can start your track recording in the Outdooractive app either with the Apple Watch or on your iPhone. Your iPhone carries out the actual recording, while the Apple Watch displays the track. You also have the option to pause or stop the recording on both devices. Make sure that you have allowed the Outdooractive app to access your location before using the Apple Watch in standalone mode to track.

You can use the watch to access the same statistics that are displayed on your iPhone. If you want to change the statistics displayed, you can do this in the app on your iPhone.

The Apple Watch app also displays your heart rate and calories burned. When you reach the end of your recording, your track will be synced automatically and you can find it in your profile under "Tracks".

The following tracking data is available the watch:

  • Duration
  • distance
  • Ascent
  • Descent
  • Altitude
  • Position

Using your Apple Watch to navigate

When connected to your smartphone, the Watch simply mirrors the data. If you don’t want to hear the voice guidance from your device, you can switch it off directly on the Watch.

Once you finish recording, you can view the track details in the Watch app. Later at home, just open the Outdooractive app on your iPhone. All tracks are automatically synced to your account, and you’ll find them under “My Page.”

Good to know

The following operating systems are supported:

watchOS 10

The functionality of the Outdooractive app depends on the smartwatch. If the watch does not have a compass, no compass‑based direction arrow will be displayed during navigation. If the smartwatch does not have a heart rate sensor, the heart rate cannot be measured.
