The Wildhornhütte SAC is located at 2303 m above Lake Iffig near Lenk im Simmental. The simple mountain hut is a popular base for tours to the Wildhorn and surrounding peaks.
The Wildhornhütte SAC is located at 2303 m above Lake Iffig in the Gelten-Iffigen nature reserve in the municipality of Lenk im Simmental. It belongs to the Moléson section of the Swiss Alpine Club and serves as a base for high-altitude tours on the Wildhorn as well as for numerous hiking and ski tour destinations in the western Bernese Alps. The hut is usually manned from the beginning of March to the beginning of May and from the end of June to mid-October; as the exact dates can change every year, it is worth checking the hut's current information before setting off on a tour. In summer, it is a popular destination for mountaineers, hikers, groups, school classes and families; in winter, it is mainly skiers and snowshoe tourers who meet here. The hut offers a simple but comfortable infrastructure with a cozy restaurant and terrace. The daily menu offers various simple dishes made from regional ingredients, and the homemade cakes are particularly popular. Overnight guests can enjoy a multi-course dinner and breakfast with marching tea as part of the half-board package. From Lenk, you can reach the Iffigenalp by car or bus, from where a well-marked mountain trail leads through the Iffigtal valley and past the Iffigsee lake to the hut in around 2.5 hours and with an elevation gain of around 700 meters. There are other approaches from the Betelberg mountain station via Leiterli and Tungelpass, from Lake Lauenen or from the Valais side via Lac de Tseuzier and Schnidejoch, each with walking times of around 4 hours. In winter, the approach usually begins at the Hubelmatte parking lot above Lenk; depending on snow conditions, a cab to Iffigenalp shortens the ascent; the route continues exclusively on touring skis or snowshoes. The hut is then the starting point for classic destinations such as the Wildhorn, Schnidehorn or Niesehorn. As a typical SAC hut, the Wildhornhütte is mainly used for multi-day routes such as the Tour du Wildhorn or various crossings between the Geltenhütte, Wildstrubelhütte and Valais huts. Visitors should be aware of the alpine situation and check current conditions, any closures, avalanche reports and the weather forecast before undertaking any undertaking. The history of the hut dates back to 1878, when the Wildhorn section built the first simple shelter. In 1898, a wooden hut was built on the current site, which was taken over by the Moléson section in 1899. After extensions, a fire and a new stone building in 1929, the hut was rebuilt and modernized several times, most recently with an extension, photovoltaic system and avalanche protection measures. Today, the Wildhornhütte is a traditional, well-equipped SAC hut with modern infrastructure in a classic high mountain location.

Rooms

The Wildhornhütte has a total of 79 beds in nine multi-bed rooms of various sizes. All beds are equipped with comforters and pillows, and guests are required to bring their own silk or cotton sleeping bag. The bedrooms have daylight windows; the furnishings are functional and simple, but offer everything you need for a night in the high mountains. The cozy dining room with around 79 seats forms the heart of the hut, a Swedish stove provides warmth, and a small selection of mountain literature and games invites you to spend sociable evenings. In good weather, a terrace in front of the hut with a view of the surrounding mountain landscape invites you to linger. In the basement there are washing troughs with cold water and a dry toilet facility with toilets and urinals. In the cold season, water is obtained by melting snow, so there is no running water available, but water is provided for brushing teeth. A winter room with around 20 beds also offers basic accommodation during the unattended period; details of access and use should be clarified directly with the hut in advance. Overnight stays in the serviced hut are only possible with prior reservation, which can be made by telephone or online. Payment is made in Swiss francs, preferably in cash or with standard EC and debit cards. There is little or no mobile phone reception in the hut area, which should be taken into account when planning a tour. However, there is a simple WLAN service available in the hut, the availability and use of which depends on current maintenance.

Food and drink

The Wildhornhütte kitchen offers a small, seasonal daily menu with simple, hearty dishes made from regional products; the homemade cakes are particularly popular. For overnight guests, half-board includes a multi-course dinner, breakfast and a liter of marching tea. On request, gluten- or lactose-free meals can also be prepared to a limited extent with advance notice.

Directions

From the frequently used starting point at Iffigenalp, a well-maintained mountain trail leads through the idyllic Iffigtal valley, past the Iffigsee lake and over the last slope directly up to the hut. There are a good 700 meters of altitude difference to overcome and the walk takes around 2.5 hours. If you are looking for a longer tour, you can ascend from Iffigenalp via Hohberg and Iffighore; you should plan around 4 hours, 1070 m ascent and 340 m descent. Alternative approaches lead from the Betelberg mountain station via Leiterli and the Tungelpass, from the Lauenensee parking lot via Kühtungel and Tungelpass or from the Valais side via Lac de Tseuzier and Schnidejoch, each with walking times of around 4 hours.

Parking

By car, drive into Lenk im Simmental at the village traffic circle onto Rawylstrasse and continue via Pöschenriedstrasse to Hubelmatte; parking is available there all year round and in summer there are regulated times for the one-way road towards Iffigenalp. Depending on the season, parking is also available on the Iffigenalp itself, from where the direct access to the hut begins. Another frequent starting point is the public parking lot at Lauenensee, which allows access via Kühtungel and Tungelpass.
