The Vignette hut is located at 3157 m above Arolla in the Val d'Hérens in the Valais Alps. It belongs to the SAC Monte Rosa section and is a base for the Haute Route.
The Vignettes hut (Cabane des Vignettes) stands at 3157 m on the Col des Vignettes in the far Val d'Hérens, high above the hamlet of Arolla in the canton of Valais. The refuge belongs to the Monte Rosa section of the Swiss Alpine Club and is a classic stage stop on the Haute Route between Chamonix and Zermatt as well as the starting point for high-altitude tours on Pigne d'Arolla, Mont Collon, L'Evêque or Mont Blanc de Cheilon. For 2026, the hut is manned from March 7 to May 6 and from June 17 to September 12; spring is particularly suitable for ski mountaineering, summer for alpine tours and glacier hikes. The hut offers half-board with dinner and breakfast as well as tea for the thermos flask; a picnic can be ordered to take away on request, and there are simple, hearty mountain dishes with rösti, cheese specialties, Valais wine and local beers. The normal ascent starts at the upper parking lot and the ski lifts above Arolla and takes around 3-4 hours via a forest path, the steep moraine between Glacier de Pièce and Tsijiore Nouve and further over the glacier to Col des Vignettes, before a short path leads up to the hut, covering around 1100 meters in altitude. The hut is mainly used as a stage base on the Haute Route and for multi-day ski and high-altitude tours. Before each tour, current conditions, closures and avalanche and weather conditions should be carefully checked and a mountain guide should be consulted if you lack experience. The origins of the hut go back to the Jenkins Refuge of 1924; the current stone hut was built in 1946 and extensively renovated in 1973 and 2008, so that today it can accommodate around 120 guests in comparatively high comfort at this altitude.

Rooms

The Vignette hut offers a total of around 120 beds in simple, wood-paneled multi-bed rooms; according to the hut, there are 11 dormitories with 7 to 16 beds as well as a separate double room. All beds are equipped with comforters and pillows, and you must bring your own sleeping bag (liner). Overnight stays are usually on a half-board basis; on request, it is also possible to book without half-board and have a separate picnic. Reservations are made via the online reservation system; spontaneous guests should definitely register in advance. Check-in is scheduled between 11:00 and 17:30, dinner is served at 18:30. A winter room with 12 beds, gas and wood stoves, cooking utensils and crockery is available outside of service hours; overnight stays are paid for in cash. There is only limited electricity in the hut, which is generated by a diesel generator; electronic devices can be charged free of charge during the day in good weather, otherwise for a small fee. There is no freely available drinking water from the tap, snow is melted in winter; drinking or boiled water can be purchased. Cash payment is preferred, but credit cards are accepted; payment on account is only possible in exceptional cases by prior arrangement.

Food and drink

The cuisine at the Vignette hut focuses on simple, home-made dishes using as many regional products as possible. Among other things, rösti and cheese specialties such as croute are served, accompanied by Valais wines or local beers; vegetarian, gluten-free and lactose-free dishes are also available by prior arrangement.

Directions

From the upper parking lot above the village center of Arolla, first follow a path through the larch forest, then climb over the striking moraine between Glacier de Pièce and Tsijiore Nouve to around point 2571 m and then cross over the Glacier de Pièce in a wide arc to the Col des Vignettes; from there, a short, marked footpath leads up to the clearly visible hut. Depending on your level of fitness and the conditions, you should plan around 3-4 hours and around 1100 meters in altitude for the ascent; the route runs over glacier terrain and requires appropriate equipment.

Parking

The free parking lot above the village center of Arolla by the ski lifts is usually used for the ascent. This is easily accessible from the valley road and offers the most direct access to the marked access path over the moraine and the Glacier de Pièce to the Vignette hut.
