Vergalda Alpe
Am 16. August 1610 ziehen sie los, um die Grenzen des Montafons zu erforschen. Am 17. August 1610 sind sie auf dem Zeinisjoch, am 18. August 1610 im Vermunt. Und am 19. August 1610 kommen der Bludenzer Vogteiverwalter David Pappus und seine Begleiter «ins Thal und Alpe Valcalda». Sie kommen nicht etwa von Gargellen her auf die Alp, sondern vom Garneratal herüber, wo sie «zu aller hinderist ob den hochen Gletschern» über das Hinterbergerjoch gestiegen sind.
Windgeschützt sollten das Tal und die Alp eigentlich sein, allein schon dem Namen nach. «Vergalda» oder «Valcalda» bedeutet so viel wie warmes Tal. Aber Davis Pappus, der auf seiner Grenztour die Güter und Rechte der Vogtei Bludenz inventarisieren will, hat einen schlechten Tag erwischt. «Wegen deß rauen Gepürgs grausamben Höhe und Wetters» hatten er und seine Begleiter einige Gefahren zu überstehen. Sie konnten aber auf die Hilfe zweier Hirten zählen, die sie ins Vergaldner Tal führten. Übernachten werden David Pappus und seine Begleiter übrigens in Gargellen unten, in der Taverne von Christian Digein.
Wer nun Jahrhunderte später auf der Vergalden Alpe eintrifft, kann sich immer noch an den gleichen Alpprodukten gütlich tun das zu Zeiten von Davis Pappus möglich war. Auf der 1696 Hektar großen Alp wird nicht nur Butter und Schnittkäse produziert, sondern auch der traditionelle «Sura Kees», der aus reiner Magermilch hergestellt wird. 4000 Kilogramm dieser Montafoner Spezialität werden im Alpsommer von Senn und Beisenn hergestellt, während ein Hirte und ein Kleinhirte zu den Tieren schauen. Über 50 Milchkühe sind im Sommer auf der Vergalden Alpe und etwa dreimal so viel Jungvieh. Und immer nahe bei der Alphütte anzutreffen ist auch ein gutes Dutzend Alpschweine.
David Pappus übrigens, der marschierte am nächsten Tag aufs Schlappiner Joch an der Grenze zum schweizerischen Prättigau. Zwei Tage später legte er in Tschagguns aber doch mal einen Ruhetag ein – und kaufte zweien seiner Begleiter, dem Forstknecht Peter Werle und dessen Sohn, neue Schuhe...
