The Valsorey hut is located at 3037 m above Bourg-Saint-Pierre on the south-western slope of the Grand Combin. The SAC hut is an important base on the Haute Route.
The Valsorey hut (Cabane de Valsorey) is located above Bourg-Saint-Pierre in the Val d'Entremont in the canton of Valais at 3037 m, directly on the south-western slope of the Grand Combin and with a view of Mont Vélan and the Mont Blanc massif. It belongs to the La Chaux-de-Fonds section of the Swiss Alpine Club and serves as a stage of the Haute Route between Chamonix and Zermatt in winter and as a base for high-altitude tours to the Grand Combin and its side peaks in summer. The ascent begins in the village of Bourg-Saint-Pierre and takes around four and a half to five hours via alpine meadows, the Cordonne Alp and the Chalet d'Amont to a rocky spur with the hut; a total of around 1,400 to 1,500 meters of altitude difference have to be covered. The hut is usually manned from mid-March to the end of May and from mid-June to mid-September and is suitable for high-altitude tours lasting several days, ski tours and alpine mountain hikes; catering includes simple half-board and small snacks. Due to the location above 3000 m in high alpine terrain, guests should always check the latest weather and avalanche reports, trail conditions and any closures before setting off on any tour and only set off with the necessary experience. First built in 1901, the hut burned down in 1924 and was rebuilt in 1926 in robust stone construction; since then it has been extended, but is still owned by the SAC La Chaux-de-Fonds section and has retained its simple, rustic character.

Rooms

The Valsoreyhütte offers around 60 beds in simple mattress dormitories and is therefore clearly geared towards mountaineering and ski tour groups. Reservations are obligatory and are made via the online reservation system; the hut is booked out quickly, especially during the Haute Route. A winter room equipped with a wood-burning stove and simple cooking facilities remains open during the unattended season. The facilities are generally functional and rather basic, with simple lounges and toilets outside the building. Payment is made in cash only, and euro notes are accepted as well as Swiss francs.

Food and drink

Half board is offered in the manned season, which includes an evening meal with soup, main course and dessert as well as breakfast the next morning. In addition, simple snacks are available during the day for arriving or departing guests.

Directions

The starting point is the village of Bourg-Saint-Pierre at around 1630 m. First you follow a road via Cordonne and the Chalet d'Amont, before a mountain path leads via Les Grands Plans and a steeper final ascent to the rocky head with the hut. Depending on the conditions, you should plan around 4.5 to 5 hours and around 1400 meters in altitude for the ascent.

Parking

The usual starting points for the approach are the parking lots in the village of Bourg-Saint-Pierre near the post bus stop or the few parking spaces near the hamlet of Cordonne on Valsorey-Strasse. As the number of parking spaces is limited and parts of the access road are narrow, it is worth arriving early or using public transport.
