Rifugio Viola, located in the valley of the same name, is halfway between the two tourist resorts of Bormio and Livigno in Alta Valtellina and just minutes away from the Viola Pass, which connects it with neighboring Switzerland. The refuge offers lunches based on typical Valtellina products and offers the possibility of staying overnight in comfortable multi-bed rooms.
Since 1972, the Fraquelli family with simple friendliness and passion has been taking care of the management of the Refuge, welcoming and hosting all hikers; those who wish to stop for lunch, those who decide to stay overnight but also those who simply visit us are always welcome. The Refuge is the right place to spend a day in the company of family and friends in close contact with nature-among numerous alpine lakes and streams-and the animals that graze in the valley in the summer, such as cows and horses; with a bit of luck you can even spot, and especially hear, the friendly marmots. All of this makes Val Viola, one of the most fascinating destinations Alta Valtellina has to offer, truly magical.

For those who would like to experience sleeping at high altitude, the Refuge has a dormitory with 16 beds and shared bathroom with shower.
For those who prefer to spend their stay in a more private manner, there is the possibility of sleeping in a small room with 6 beds and private bathroom with shower. (extra charge of 30.00 € on the room if occupied by 2/3 guests).

N.B. The room is assigned after 4 pm.
Food and drink
The special feature of the Refuge lies in offering a typical lunch each day featuring yellow polenta, prepared over a wood fire or grilled. This tradition carried on over the years has caused friends from neighboring Switzerland to nickname the Refuge "Polentahütte," which really means "polenta house."Accompanying the polenta are: mountain herb stew, prepared following grandmother's ancient recipe, followed by the characteristic grilled "luganighe" and alpine cheese, a casera, which, aged in the managers' cellars, is further enriched in its flavor. To end the meal on a high note, one cannot miss a slice of the homemade buckwheat flour and blueberry cake, followed by mocha coffee with willow "palin."The Refuge also offers platters of cured meats, including local Bresaola, and cheeses from local farms, stuffed sandwiches and grilled polenta toast.Typical menu: €17.00 (natural water, house wine and coffee included)
For both lunch and dinner, reservations are always recommended.

Surroundings
Val Viola is a true hiking and biking gem for the whole family.
A gentle climb leads from Arnoga to the plain where Lake Viola is located, just before the Refuge. The route is about 8 kilometers (with an elevation gain of 500 meters) and allows you to enjoy unspoiled views, including glaciers and alpine lakes, and then enjoy the typical products of the Viola Refuge.
For e-bikes (pedal-assisted bicycles), the hut offers the possibility of recharging the battery. If needed, a kit is also available for minor repairs to one's bike.
Rifugio Viola is also located on the route of the"Sentiero Italia," a path created by CAI that, from north to south, crosses the entire Italian peninsula, including the islands. The Stage at Rifugio Viola thus allows you, through the Sentiero Italia, to reach Rifugio Malghera (in Val Grosina) or Livigno (through the Vallaccia Pass).

Directions
Driving along the Foscagno state road 301, which leads from Bormio to Livigno, we arrive at Arnoga (m. 1870).
From here the hike begins on foot. After walking an initial stretch of about 2 kilometers slightly uphill, you catch a glimpse of Lago Viola (2,267 m) and the Refuge in the distance.
The remaining 30 minutes are characterized by an almost flat road.
During the summer season it is possible to pass through the initial part of Val Viola by car (as far as the parking lot at Altumeira), purchasing a daily ticket at the valley entrance (limited places).
The Refuge can also be reached for those coming from Switzerland: from the locality of Sfazù, on the road from Tirano to the Bernina Pass, drive through Val Di Campo, past its beautiful small lakes and then up to the Viola Pass. The walking time from Sfazù to the Refuge is about 3 hours.
