The Sustlihütte SAC is located at 2257 m above the Meiental in the canton of Uri above the Sustenpass road. It is a popular base for climbers, ski tours and families.
The Sustlihütte is located at 2257 m on a sunny terrace high above the Sustenpass road in the Meiental, municipality of Wassen, in the canton of Uri. It belongs to the SAC Rossberg section and is an easily accessible base for hikers, alpinists, climbers and families thanks to its short access routes. The hut is usually open in summer from June to October and in spring from around mid-March to mid-April for the ski touring season; in 2026 it will be closed in the summer season for renovation and extension work; the current opening times are listed on the hut website. The prices for overnight stays include dinner, breakfast and a liter of marching tea, so that guests are catered for without much planning. Day guests can stop off in the cozy dining rooms. Most visitors ascend from the Sustenbrüggli on the Sustenpass road; depending on the route chosen, the ascent takes around 1 to 2.5 hours with an altitude difference of around 350 to 700 meters, with variants via the Leiterliweg with ladders, the path along the Sustlibach, via Oberplatti or the panoramic path from Gorezmettlen. In winter, ski touring routes lead from the Meiental to the hut. The best season for hiking, climbing and family excursions is the snow-free summer, for ski tours the late winter and early spring. As always in the high mountains, current conditions, any closures and the weather forecast should be checked carefully before embarking on a tour. The Sustlihütte was built in 1915 by the SAC Rossberg section. It was later rebuilt in 1970 and extensively renovated in 1992; the current renovation from 2025 continues this history. The SAC Rossberg section is still the owner today.

Rooms

The Sustlihütte offers 67 sleeping places in shared rooms during the season. The beds are equipped with comforters, a sleeping bag is obligatory and can be rented on site if required. Showers are not available, the toilet facilities are located in an outbuilding. In the unattended period, a winter room with 13 sleeping places is available for self-catering, equipped with comforters, gas stove, wood stove, crockery and drinks; water must be obtained from the stream or snow, the toilet is also located in the outbuilding. Reservations for overnight stays are essential and are preferably made online, also for the winter room, to avoid overcrowding. Self-cooking is not permitted in the serviced hut. Dogs are welcome, but must be registered and are not allowed in the bedrooms or in the dining room; they spend the night in the shoe room on a blanket. On site, payment is preferably made in cash in Swiss francs or by debit card or TWINT; credit cards are not accepted as a means of payment.

Food and drink

During the serviced period, guests stay overnight with half board; the overnight price includes a multi-course dinner, breakfast and a liter of marching tea. Day guests are catered for in the restaurant with simple, typical mountain food and drinks.

Public transport

The train takes you via the Gotthard line to Göschenen, from where a Postbus runs in the direction of the Susten Pass to the Sustenbrüggli and Gorezmettlen stops. Both stops are on the Sustenpass road and serve as a starting point for the ascent on foot to the hut; the Postbus service over the pass runs according to the timetable during the summer months.

Directions

From Sustenbrüggli on the Sustenpass road, the marked approach leads either via the less steep path along the Sustlibach stream to the hut in around 1 hour and around 350 meters in altitude, or via the Leiterliweg, which climbs several short ladders over steep steps in a similar time. Other approaches start above a tunnel at Oberplatti or Gorezmettlen and take around 2 to 2.5 hours, depending on the route. In winter, access is usually on touring skis via routes from the Meiental.

Parking

Arrival by car is from the highway exit Wassen via the Sustenpassstrasse to the starting points Sustenbrüggli or Gorezmettlen. A limited number of signposted parking spaces are available there; at Sustenbrüggli, the official parking lot at the Werkhof on both sides of the road should be used. Groups with several vehicles in particular are requested to park one behind the other to save space. Camping is not permitted in the Sustenbrüggli parking lot; official parking spaces for overnight stays are located at the top of the Susten Pass.
