The Schreckhornhütte is located at 2527 m above Grindelwald in the canton of Bern. It is the base for the Schreckhorn, Lauteraarhorn and other high-altitude tours.
The Schreckhornhütte is located at 2527 m on the edge of the Upper Ischmeer above the Lower Grindelwald Glacier, south-east of Grindelwald in the canton of Bern. It belongs to the Basel section of the Swiss Alpine Club and is located in the Jungfrau-Aletsch UNESCO World Heritage Site, with unobstructed views of numerous Bernese Alps. The hut is a simple, traditional SAC hut and is normally manned from the end of June to the end of September; outside of this period, a winter room is available. It serves as a starting point for high-altitude tours to the Schreckhorn and Lauteraarhorn as well as the Strahlegghorn, Klein Schreckhorn and other peaks, and also for crossings to the Lauteraarhütte, Finsteraarhornhütte, Glecksteinhütte and Mittellegihütte. In the manned season, overnight stays with half board and simple meals are offered, and a packed lunch can be prepared for the following day on request. The approach is usually from Grindelwald via the Pfingstegg cable car or directly from the valley; from Pfingstegg, the trail leads to the hut via Berghaus Bäregg and the moraines of the glacier in several hours. From Bäregg, the trail is marked white-blue-white as an alpine route and secured in places with chains and ladders. Alternatively, there are challenging high-altitude routes from the Eismeer station of the Jungfrau Railway. Depending on the snow conditions, the best time to visit is between the end of June and the end of September; in winter, the hut is mainly used by well-equipped high-altitude touring and ski touring groups via high-alpine routes. Before setting off on a tour, you should always check the current conditions, any route closures and the weather forecast, as the approach is exposed. The current refuge was rebuilt in 1980/81 around 100 m above the old Schwarzegghütte after the Strahlegghütte further up was badly damaged by an avalanche in 1976/77. The Basel section has operated and maintained the facility ever since and has had the access renovated several times, including with a new approach in the 1990s.

Rooms

As a simple SAC hut, the Schreckhornhütte offers sleeping accommodation in multi-bed dormitories; the current capacity is around 56 overnight stays in summer. Pillows and comforters are available, a sleeping bag is obligatory and can be rented if required. The hut is manned from the end of June to the end of September, during which time reservations for overnight stays - ideally online or by telephone - are expressly desired and even compulsory for the winter room. In winter and during the snowy transitional period, there is an unattended winter room with around 20 sleeping places where you can heat and cook with wood. The hut has simple washing facilities with cold running water and mirrors indoors; outside there is a well and a solar shower for refreshment, but the water is not treated as drinking water. Slippers are available in various sizes so that mountain boots can remain in the drying room. There is no public WLAN connection, but mobile phone reception can be found a few meters outside the hut at the flagpole, where cell phones can also be charged using the existing power supply. Payment is made exclusively in cash, in Swiss francs or in euros according to the exchange rate given on site. The usual SAC hut rules apply both for summer operation and for overnight stays in the winter room, which is why consideration and an appropriate night's rest are a matter of course.

Directions

The usual starting point for the ascent is the Pfingsteggbahn mountain station above Grindelwald. From there, follow a red and white marked mountain trail to Bäregg and on via Rots Gufer to the moraines on the edge of the glacier; from Bäregg, the trail is marked as an alpine route in white-blue-white and secured with chains and individual ladders. Depending on your level of fitness, you should allow 4 to 5 hours and around 1300 to 1400 meters of altitude for the ascent from Pfingstegg, and around 5 to 5.5 hours if you start in the village of Grindelwald. Experienced mountaineers also use the high alpine access routes from the Jungfrau Railway's Eismeer station, but these are only possible in very good conditions and with the appropriate equipment.

Parking

Those arriving by car generally use the large, paid parking lot directly at the Pfingsteggbahn valley station on the southern edge of the village of Grindelwald; from there you can either walk or take the cable car to the mountain station and start the ascent to the hut. Additional parking spaces are available at the Glacier Gorge, also at the back of the valley, as well as in the Grindelwald Terminal Park+Ride parking lot, from where a local bus runs regularly to the village and the Pfingsteggbahn. There is no road or parking facilities directly at the Schreckhornhütte; access is exclusively on foot.
