Rotondohütte

The Rotondo Hut SAC is located at 2570 m above the Witenwasserental in the south of the canton of Uri, in the municipality of Realp and close to the borders with Ticino and Valais. It belongs to the SAC Lägern section (Aargau) and stands in a wild, largely untouched high mountain landscape of the Gotthard massif. From the terrace you can see the Witenwasseren glacier with its lake as well as peaks such as Witenwasserenstock, Pizzo Rotondo, Hüenerstock and the Leckihörner; the continental divide, where the catchment areas of the Rhine, Rhone and Ticino meet, runs nearby. The hut is a classic base for ski tours in winter and for alpine hikes and climbs in summer. According to the hut operator, the manned winter season usually lasts from the end of December to the end of April, with a short unmanned phase in January; in summer, the hut is usually open from mid-June to the beginning of October, with a winter room available for self-catering in between. The best times to visit are therefore the months of January to April for ski tours and July to September for hikes, climbing tours and quiet mountain days. During the day, the hut offers a simple menu; in the evening, overnight guests are served a half-board menu with soup, main course, dessert, breakfast and marching tea; vegetarian, gluten-free and lactose-free options are available by prior arrangement, vegan cuisine is not offered. As the tap water is pumped from the glacial lake and is not considered drinking water, the hut sells bottled mineral water. The usual starting point is Realp (1538 m) in the Ursern Valley, which is easily accessible by car and with the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway. In winter, the ascent from there takes around 3.5 to 4 hours on a marked route through the Witenwasserental valley, covering an altitude difference of around 1040 m. In summer, too, the ascent usually begins in Realp, either via the military road to Oberstafel and continuing on the hiking trail or via variants via Helig Egg, Tälli and Stelliboden. Alternatively, longer approaches are possible from the Gotthard or Furka Pass and from the Bedretto Valley via the Passo di Cavanna. Current conditions, trail closures and the weather forecast should be checked before every tour, especially in the high alpine spring and fall. The Rotondo hut was opened in 1909, later extended and rebuilt several times; after major renovations and an extension to the east, it is now a simple but modern SAC hut with around 70 beds in dormitories.
