Quinto Alpini Mountain Hut
Mountain hut on the southern slope of Monte Zebrú in the Ortler Alps.
The Rifugio Quinto Alpini is a mountain hut on the southern flank of Monte Zebrú in the Ortler Alps. It is located at an elevation of 2,878 m above the Val Zebrú and belongs to the municipality of Valfurva, which is located in the Italian province of Sondrio, in Lombardy.
The mountain hut was built in 1884 as the Capanna Milano by the Milan section of the Club Alpino Italiano to provide southern access to the central peaks of the main ridge of the Ortler Alps. It was first expanded in 1901.[1]
During World War I, the hut housed the sector command of the Italian troops operating in Val Zebrù and served as a key point in the defense of the Italian Ortler Front. In 1926, it was renamed in memory of the 5th Alpini Regiment, which had been deployed here during the war.
