Eine schön gelegene Hütte, günstig für den Aufstieg zum Mulhacén und den Übergang zu den Siete Lagunas (sieben Bergseen) unterhalb der Ostabhänge des Mulhacén sowie den Abstieg nach Trevélez. Zwei Personen des Personals sprechen Englisch, sind aber nicht immer anwesend. Mobilfunkverbindung nur für Gesellschaften YOIGO und MOVISTAR, WLAN kostenlos.
Die Hütte gehört dem Ministerium für Tourismus und Sport und dem Umweltministerium der Regierung von Andalusien und wird von der Federación Andaluza de Montañismo betrieben. Sie liegt über dem Tal des Poqueira oberhalb des Zusammenflusses von Río Monachil und Río Seco.
Von der Hütte gibt es nach Norden einen wunderbaren Ausblick auf die Hauptkette der Sierra Nevada, u.a. auf den Pico de la Veleta. Nach Süden sieht man eine große Anzahl von Tälern, blickt zum Mittelmeer und kann - nach Angaben auf der Homepage - die Nordküste Afrikas sehen.
Es gibt sieben Schlafräume, Speisesaal mit Kamin, Toiletten und Duschen, Terrasse und für jeden Gast ein Schließfach, das groß genug für den Rucksack ist. Aufnahmekapazität: 100 Schlafgäste.

Im Sommer fährt ein Kleinbus von Capileira über Hoya del Portillo bis zum Alto del Chorillo (2.700 m). Informationen, insbesondere über Abfahrtszeiten, die im Internet nicht veröffentlicht sind, am Centro de Interpretación der Nationalparkverwaltung in Capileira (gegenüber Rathaus) und bei bei der Kontrollstelle Hoya del Portillo (T. 0034958 76 34 86 oder 0034671 56 44 06). Ob an diesen Stellen Englisch oder gar Deutsch gesprochen wird, konnte der Autor nicht ermitteln.
