The unmanaged FFCAM Refuge Packe is located at 2,495 m on the Col de Rabiet above Betpouey. It serves as a base for tours in the Néouvielle and Pic-Long massifs.
In the high altitudes of the Néouvielle massif, the FFCAM's Refuge Packe is located at around 2,495 m on the Col de Rabiet, above Betpouey and on the edge of the Pyrenees National Park. The small, freely accessible stone building with its characteristic pointed roof is unmanaged and open all year round and is primarily aimed at long-distance hikers on the Tour du Néouvielle, alpinists on Pic Long, Turon de Néouvielle or Pic de la Coume de l'Ours as well as anglers on the nearby mountain lakes such as Lac du Pourtet. For most hikers, the summer months from June to October are the most pleasant time for the ascent; in winter, the hut serves as a bivouac base for experienced ski tourers. From the parking lot on the Plateau du Lienz near Barèges, a marked trail leads over the piste to the Refuge de la Glère, then crosses westwards into the Vallée du Bolou, passes the stream and climbs in hairpin bends past the Lac du Pourtet up to the Col de Rabiet. Depending on your fitness level, you should allow around four and a half hours for the ascent of around 930 meters from the parking lot to the hut. As a free FFCAM base, the hut does not offer any catering; those staying here overnight bring their own provisions and prepare them on the existing stove and simple cooking facilities. Careful tour planning is particularly important due to the exposed location in high alpine terrain: current conditions, possible closures and the weather forecast should be checked before each visit. The construction of the refuge goes back to a legacy from the British Pyrenean pioneer Charles Packe: in 1895, the Club Alpin Français had it built on the Col de Rabiet in accordance with his bequest, and the refuge named after him was inaugurated in August 1896. A comprehensive renovation at the turn of the millennium by the CAF Lourdes-Cauterets has preserved the historical character with the striking ogival roof shape and at the same time carefully renewed the interior.

Rooms

The Refuge Packe is a small stone building with a single bedroom and a total of eight simple campsites on wooden platforms with mattresses and blankets. The common room has a table and benches as well as a wood-burning stove; wood is usually replenished by the club in charge. Cooking is done on a simple cooking facility, crockery is provided and water is fetched from the outlet of the nearby Lac du Pourtet. There is a simple power supply for lighting and an emergency radio system, but no hut service, no reservations and no sanitary facilities such as showers. As a non-maintained FFCAM refuge, the usual self-catering principle applies: bring your own hut sleeping bag, leave the hut clean, take waste back down to the valley and, if possible, add some wood for the next guests. The entire hut also functions as a winter room and is open all year round; the overnight stay is paid for online via the FFCAM platform at the end of the stay; the contact person in the valley is the Club Alpin Français Lourdes-Cauterets on +33 5 62 42 13 67 or clubalpin.lourdes@wanadoo.fr.

Public transport

The train first takes you to Lourdes, from where regional bus lines such as TER line 935 and line 2 "des Gaves" run to Barèges. From Barèges, you can reach the Plateau du Lienz, the starting point of the ascent to the hut, on foot or in winter with the ski bus Navette.

Directions

The starting point is usually the Plateau du Lienz above Barèges at the Auberge Chez Louisette. From there, follow the piste in the direction of Refuge de la Glère and later branch off to the west into the Vallée du Bolou. After crossing the stream, hairpin bends lead past the Lac du Pourtet up to the Col de Rabiet, where the Refuge Packe stands in a panoramic location. From the parking lot to the hut, there are around 930 meters of ascent and around 4.5 hours of climbing.

Parking

To reach the Refuge Packe, mountaineers use the public parking lot on the Plateau du Lienz at the Auberge Chez Louisette above Barèges; in winter, when there is a lot of snow, people often park at the parking lot of the Tournaboup station and take the ski bus to the Plateau du Lienz. Since a municipal decision, the former forest road further into the valley has been closed to general traffic, so Camp Rollot serves as another common parking end.
