The Refuge L'Etang Pinet is located at around 2240 m above Auzat on the banks of the Étang Pinet in the Ariège-Pyrenees. The hut is the base for Montcalm and Pique d'Estats.
The Refuge L'Etang Pinet is an FFCAM CAF hut located above Auzat in Ariège, directly on the banks of the small mountain lake Étang Pinet at around 2240 m above sea level. From here, the region's classic 3000 m peaks such as the Pic du Montcalm (3077 m) and the Pique d'Estats (3143 m) can be reached, which many rope teams tackle as a two-day tour with an overnight stay. The hut is manned throughout the summer season, usually from the beginning of June to the beginning of October, with an additional spring period in March and April if there are sufficient reservations, when the approach is often still wintry. From the valley, the marked mountain trail leads from the parking lot de l'Artigue (approx. 1180 m) up to the refuge in around 3.5 hours over an altitude difference of around 1000 meters; the trail initially follows the course of the stream, then winds steeply through the forest and finally reaches the open high valley with the lake. The hut offers 54 beds in four mattress dormitories and a simple, functional infrastructure with a dining room, sanitary facilities, running water, heating, electricity and showers (for a fee). Outside of the serviced period, a winter room with 18 storage spaces is open; according to the operator, there is no water, heating or gas here, which is why you have to plan your own fuel and water supply. In culinary terms, the team focuses on home-made cuisine with organic and, where possible, regional products, from Ariège cheese and traditional charcuterie to local beers and jams. This makes the refuge suitable both as a day destination in its own right, with a swim in the clear mountain lake, and as a base for mountaineering and ski tours. Historically, the hut dates back to an initiative by the municipality of Auzat at the end of the 1980s; after planning by architects Claude Branger and G. Romeu, it was inaugurated in 1993 in the then modern, light-colored sheet metal and wood style. As with all tours in the High Pyrenees: plan your route carefully, check current conditions, closures and the weather and avalanche situation, especially in the spring ski touring season in March and April.

Rooms

The Refuge L'Etang Pinet offers 54 beds in four classic mattress dormitories with 10, 12 and two 16 beds; there are no single or twin rooms. Blankets and pillows are provided in each camp, but it is obligatory to bring your own hut sleeping bag or a light inner sleeping bag. Hut shoes (Crocs) are available in the house so that heavy mountain boots can remain in the drying room. The camps should be vacated by 8 a.m. so that the guards can clean the rooms and prepare them for the next night. In summer, there is a heated hut with a common room, indoor WC, washing facilities, running water, electricity and sockets as well as showers, which can be used for a fee. WLAN is deliberately not provided; instead, there are books, magazines, board games and a guitar, which invites you to spend an evening together. Outside of the serviced period, a self-catering winter room with 18 beds is open, in which, according to the operator, no water, gas or heating is available, which is why it is essential to have your own stove, fuel and water organization. Reservations are mandatory for the serviced period and should be made in good time via the online system or by calling the Gardienne Andrea Ribout.

Food and drink

The cuisine at Refuge L'Etang Pinet is entirely homemade, using mainly organic and regional products. The dishes include cheese from local farms, traditional Ariège charcuterie, jams from the Pyrenees, organic lemonades and local craft beers from Auzat. The result is a simple but high-quality mountain meal that is particularly appreciated after long ascents and days on the summit.

Directions

The starting point for the normal route is the de l'Artigue parking lot above Auzat at around 1180 m. From there, follow the marked route (GRT, red and white) initially along the de l'Artigue stream, cross it over a bridge and ascend in numerous hairpin bends through the Fontanal forest. Above the tree line, tracks and signposts lead past the Orri huts of Pla Nouzère into the cirque with the Étang Sourd and on to the Étang Pinet, on the banks of which the refuge is located. In dry conditions, you should plan around 3.5 hours and around 1000-1060 meters of altitude for the ascent and a similar amount of time for the descent.

Parking

From Toulouse, take the N20 to Foix and continue to Tarascon-sur-Ariège; at the Sabart traffic circle, drive into the Vicdessos valley as far as Auzat and follow the narrow road towards L'Artigue until you reach the officially designated de l'Artigue parking lot at around 1180m. The parking lot serves as a starting point for the Refuge L'Etang Pinet, the Cascades de l'Artigue and several high-altitude tours; access is restricted for very wide vehicles, and in the high season it is advisable to arrive early to get a parking space.
