The Refuge du Plan de la Lai is located at 1818 m in Beaufortain above Lac de Roselend. The CAF hut is a popular stage on the GR5 and Tour du Beaufortain.
The Refuge du Plan de la Lai is a small CAF refuge at 1818 m in Beaufortain, in the municipality of Beaufort on the Route du Cormet de Roselend above the Roselend reservoir. The rustic stone house belongs to the Fédération Française des Clubs Alpins et de Montagne and is run by William Bon Mardion and Élise Rouchy. The hut is staffed from mid-June to mid-September; the rest of the year it is unattended in winter. In the summer season, it is a central stop on the GR5, the Tour du Beaufortain and the Route des Grandes Alpes, ideal for long-distance hikers, cyclists and families. During this period, the kitchen offers traditional, home-made Savoyard dishes using mainly organic and local produce, with lunch snacks, cakes, hot meals and evening menus for overnight guests only; breakfasts and picnics are prepared on reservation. The easiest access is from Beaufort via the road to Cormet de Roselend to the Plan de la Lai parking lot directly on the D925, from where it is only a few steps to the hut without any significant elevation gain; many guests also reach it as part of multi-day crossings from neighboring refuges. The hut is located at the foot of the Via Ferrata du Roc du Vent and is particularly suitable for hiking, trail running and cycling tours from June to September; in the snowy season, the winter room serves as a base for experienced ski tourers and snowshoe hikers. Before each tour, current conditions, possible road closures and the weather situation should be checked and the instructions of the hut staff followed. The building was originally a Maison cantonnière built in 1934 for road maintenance and was later taken over by the Club Alpin Français and converted into a refuge on the Great Alpine Ski Crossing.

Rooms

The Refuge du Plan de la Lai has 19 sleeping places in two simple communal camps with 12 and 7 beds; there is also a yurt with six places, which is used by reservation in the summer season. Blankets and couettes are available, but you will need your own sleeping bag. In the serviced hut, washbasins, showers, indoor toilets, a lounge and electricity with sockets offer simple but functional comfort, yet the house remains deliberately cramped and rustic. Outside the summer season, a winter operation with the same capacity is open; gas, cooking facilities, crockery, wood-burning stove and heating enable self-catering, reservations must be made online. The hut bears the "Refuges en famille" label and is suitable for tours with children thanks to its easy access. Pets are allowed according to the hut's regulations, details should be clarified in advance. There is no mobile phone reception or WLAN, only the hut team has radio contact - so inform family members about your route in advance and check the weather, avalanche and road conditions before the tour.

Food and drink

During the supervised period, the Refuge du Plan de la Lai offers homemade, traditional cuisine with mainly organic and local products. For breakfast, there are home-made jams, bread from the bakery in Beaufort, butter and cheese from the local cooperative, honey from a beekeeper in the Tarentaise, eggs, muesli, milk, tea and coffee. At lunchtime, hearty snacks such as the "Croc du Vent" with Beaufort cheese, salad variations, savory crêpes, daily specials with diots and crozets or polenta, soups with Tomme de Savoie, regional charcuterie as well as numerous cakes and tarts such as the rhubarb meringue tart or brioche with Beaufort are served. In the evening, overnight guests can expect a set menu with vegetable soup, a Savoyard main course and homemade dessert; the team will cater for vegetarian or other special dietary requirements by prior arrangement.

Public transport

The easiest way to get to Albertville is by train and from there by bus to Beaufort. From the center of Beaufort, there are bus connections in the summer season in the direction of Arêches, then the journey to Plan de la Lai remains via the road to Cormet de Roselend, usually by cab or hitchhiking. From the Tarentaise side, take the train to Bourg-Saint-Maurice and, in summer, regional buses in the direction of Chapieux; the mountain road also leads from there until you can get off near the Plan de la Lai and change to the hut.

Directions

The most common approach starts at the Plan de la Lai parking lot on the Route du Cormet de Roselend between Beaufort and Bourg-Saint-Maurice. From here, it is only a few minutes' walk on a marked path directly to the small stone house, the entrance is almost at the same altitude as the refuge, so there are practically no additional meters in altitude. Long-distance hikers can also reach the hut via the GR5 or the Tour du Beaufortain from neighboring refuges such as Presset or the Col du Bonhomme.

Parking

The officially designated Plan de la Lai parking lot is located directly on the Route du Cormet de Roselend (D925) between Beaufort and Bourg-Saint-Maurice, a few meters above the refuge. It is explicitly mentioned on the information pages of FFCAM and the local tourist office as the access point to the hut and offers the shortest possible approach. In the cold season, the pass road is often closed or only cleared in sections; depending on the snow conditions, the ascent then begins much further down at the bend in the road that has been cleared, which is why you should check the road conditions in advance.
