Refuge du Maupas

Rooms

The Refuge du Maupas offers a total of 30 beds in a single mattress dormitory. This consists of three long wooden bunks for ten people each on three levels, equipped with mattresses and blankets; a sleeping bag is recommended. The overnight stay is therefore in a classic dormitory, there are no single or double rooms. A simple parlor with seating for around 26 people serves as a lounge and dining room and is heated electrically. There are no proper washrooms or showers, just a cold water tap outside behind the hut and a simple outdoor toilet; the water is not treated and should be filtered or boiled. During the serviced season, reservations - especially at weekends and during the vacation season - are expressly requested via the online system or by calling the hut team. Outside the serviced season, the recreation room with storage remains open for self-catering, but without kitchen or dishes; payment is then made via a trusted cash register or online afterwards. The hut has electricity and heating, which makes staying inside relatively comfortable even in bad weather, but mobile phone reception may be limited depending on the provider.

Food and drink

During the manned season, the hut team offers simple, mountain-appropriate cuisine with evening meals, breakfast and packed lunches on request; half board is the usual form of catering. Out of season there is no meal service and no accessible kitchen or crockery, self-caterers must bring their own stove and all equipment.

Directions

The ascent begins at the parking lot at the end of the Vallée du Lys above Bagnères-de-Luchon, near the Ô Berges du Lys inn at around 1150 m. From there, a marked mountain path leads to the refuge in around 7.5-8 km and around 1300 vertical meters in 4 to 4.5 hours. The trail initially follows the valley, then climbs in serpentines through forest and meadows to the Cabane de Prat-Long and continues towards the lakes Vert and Bleu. Above Lac Vert, keep to Lac Bleu before following the red-marked path at the junction, which leads directly up to the hut in another 20 minutes or so via a steeper slope.

Parking

You can usually get there by car to Bagnères-de-Luchon and continue on the road into the Vallée du Lys. At the end of the valley, just before the dam and opposite the Auberge Ô Berges du Lys, there is a large, free parking lot that is used especially for hikers and hut guests. This is where the road ends; from here, the route continues exclusively on foot to the Refuge du Maupas.
