The Refuge des Grands Mulets is located on a rock spur in the Bossons glacier above Chamonix at 3051 m. It is an important base for the historic Mont Blanc route.
The Refuge des Grands Mulets is located in the Bossons glacier on the northern flank of Mont Blanc in the municipality of Chamonix-Mont-Blanc at around 3051 m. The hut of the Chamonix section of the Club Alpin Français/FFCAM stands on an isolated rock spur on the historic ascent route from Balmat and Paccard and is now an important base for ski and high-altitude tours on Mont Blanc. It is usually open from the end of March to the end of July, while a simple winter room with limited space remains open for the rest of the year. In spring in particular, many ski mountaineers use the hut as a stage for the Mont Blanc on skis, and in early summer it serves alpinists as an alternative to the overcrowded Goûter route. From Chamonix, the usual starting point can be reached via the cable car up the Aiguille du Midi to the Plan de l'Aiguille middle station; from there, a high alpine, glaciated approach of around 750 meters in altitude and around three to four hours' walking time leads over moraines, below the old Gare des Glaciers and through the glacier terrain on the Bossons Glacier up to the rocky head of the hut. Alternatively, there are more challenging approaches from the Tunnel du Mont-Blanc or from the hamlet of Les Bossons via the Chalet des Pyramides and the Gîte à Balmat. The Refuge is mainly used for multi-day undertakings, ski crossings and summit ascents and is less of a destination for leisurely family hikes. Before each tour, you should carefully check the latest information on the state of the glacier, crevasse conditions, the risk of falling rocks in the Jonction area, any closures and the weather forecast; for less experienced hikers, it is advisable to be accompanied by a mountain guide. The first simple shelter at this location was built in 1853, followed by a new building in 1896/97; the current building dates from 1960 and was inaugurated by Maurice Herzog on August 7.

Rooms

The Refuge des Grands Mulets offers 68 beds in simple mattress dormitories when it is open, plus a winter room with 16 beds during the rest of the year. Reservations are obligatory and are processed via the Club Alpin Français online system; telephone inquiries are generally only possible at short notice before the stay. There are blankets or comforters in the hut, but a sleeping bag is recommended for hygiene reasons. Sanitary facilities with indoor toilets and simple washing facilities as well as a few showers are available; water, heating and lighting are provided via the usual infrastructure of a high mountain refuge. There is a separate room for self-catering, power sockets for charging small devices and WLAN access when the refuge is manned. Overnight stays take place in communal rooms with hut rest in the evening and early wake-up so that the rope teams can start their tours on time. A winter room remains open as emergency accommodation even when not in use and is equipped with mattresses and basic equipment. Cash is the preferred method of payment at the hut; credit cards are not accepted. Mobile phone reception may be limited depending on the network and weather conditions, so a functioning emergency plan should be considered before the tour.

Food and drink

During the supervised period, the Refuge des Grands Mulets offers half board with a hot mountaineering dinner and breakfast; in addition, simple picnics are provided for the following day, as well as drinks and small snacks.

Public transport

By public transport, you usually travel to Chamonix-Mont-Blanc by train or bus. Directions

From the Plan de l'Aiguille at around 2310 m, first follow a marked path towards the Glacier des Pèlerins and on to the former Gare des Glaciers under the north face of the Aiguille du Midi. You then enter the Bossons glacier; via a changing, often crevasse-filled glacier route, you reach the junction of the two ice streams and then climb up the wide hollow below the rocky head on which the refuge stands. Depending on the conditions, you should allow around three to four hours for this high alpine ascent, which is around 750 meters in altitude.
