The Refuge des Bésines is located at 2101 m in the Pyrenees above the Étang des Bésines near Mérens-les-Vals. The CAF hut is a stage base on the GR10 and the HRP.
The Refuge des Bésines is a managed hut of the Club Alpin Français at 2101 m in the Ariège, municipality of Mérens-les-Vals, high above the Étang des Bésines in the Carlit massif of the Pyrenees. The Montagnards Ariégeois section runs the hut, which opened in 1996 and offers 56 beds in several dormitories as well as a winter room with 16 storage spaces. In the summer season, usually from the beginning of June to at least the end of September, currently announced until the end of October 2026, it is the base for GR 10, Haute Randonnée Pyrénéenne and the Tour des Montagnes d'Ax; the snow-free months of July to September are particularly popular. The base can be reached from L'Hospitalet-près-l'Andorre in around 3 hours and around 600 meters in altitude via a marked mountain path; longer approaches lead up from Mérens-les-Vals or from the Col de Puymorens. The Étang des Bésines, the Lanoux reservoir and peaks such as the Pic d'Auriol are nearby, making the refuge suitable for multi-day crossings as well as day trips and fishing trips. In winter, the winter area is mainly used, usually with skis or snowshoes from the Col de Puymorens; this requires experience in the high mountains in winter and full safety equipment. As everywhere in the Pyrenees, the current weather conditions, trail conditions, closures and avalanche risk should be carefully checked before each tour.

Rooms

In summer, the Refuge des Bésines offers 56 beds in several simple dormitories; you sleep in bunk beds with blankets or comforters, and you are required to bring your own hut sleeping bag or "inner sleeping bag". Reservations for overnight stays and half-board are usually made online, larger groups should contact the hut wardens directly by email; those wishing to come for dinner should make their reservation the day before at the latest and arrive by around 6 pm. Dinner is served communally at 7 pm, breakfast as a buffet between 7 and 8 am, and the team will prepare packed lunches for the next day on request. The house has a lounge, indoor toilets, two hot showers with tokens, running water, lighting and power sockets as well as heating and Wi-Fi during the supervised period. Payment is made in cash, by check or with Chèques-Vacances, bank cards are not accepted. Pets are not allowed in the building and guests are asked to take their garbage back down to the valley and to respect quiet hours at night. Outside the management period, a winter room with 16 mattresses is open; there are basic storage facilities, but no water, gas or heating, and the fee is paid in cash or by check into a cash box on site or paid afterwards via the FFCAM platform.

Public transport

By public transport, take TER or Intercités SNCF trains to L'Hospitalet-près-l'Andorre on the Toulouse-Latour-de-Carol line; from the station, it is just a few minutes' walk to the starting point at the parking lot above the village. Alternatively, bus connections from La Tour-de-Carol in the direction of Andorra can be used to start longer ascents at the Col de Puymorens or in Porté-Puymorens; from the end points, there are always mountain paths that can only be accessed on foot or, in winter, with skis or snowshoes.

Directions

The normal ascent begins at the "des Bésines" parking lot above L'Hospitalet-près-l'Andorre: from there, you follow a marked path through the Bésines valley, pass the Étang des Bésines and reach the refuge after around 3 hours and around 600 meters in altitude. A quieter but significantly longer variant starts in Mérens-les-Vals and leads through the Nabre valley in around 5½ hours up to the lake and the refuge. From the pass road at Col de Puymorens or from the parking lot there, there is another approach (around 7.3 km, almost 730 m altitude difference, around 4 hours' walking time), first via a lane and then via a mountain path over the Pourtella d'En Garcia to the hut.

Parking

By car, usually take the RN20 to L'Hospitalet-près-l'Andorre, turn uphill in the village after the traffic circle and park in the signposted "des Bésines" parking lot above the village; the marked ascent to the hut begins from there. From the Mediterranean, take the Puymorens tunnel or the Col de Puymorens to other parking lots near the top of the pass, where the signposted ascent starts via the lane and mountain path towards the Refuge des Bésines.
