The Refuge de La Pra is located at 2105 m above Revel in the Belledonne massif and belongs to the Fédération Française des Clubs Alpins et de Montagne (FFCAM). The hut is an important stage of the GR 738 "Haute Traversée de Belledonne" and the starting point for tours to Grand Colon, the Lacs du Doménon, Croix de Belledonne and Grande Lauzière. It is open in winter 2026 from February 20 to April 18 and in summer from June 5 to September 27; in between, a winter room is open, but reservations are now also required outside of opening hours. At lunchtime there are simple à la carte or take-away dishes, in the evening a set menu with soup, main course and dessert, plus a selection of hot and cold drinks. The most popular approach leads from the Pré Raymond parking lot above Freydières in around 2.5 to 3 hours via the reservoir and Lac du Crozet to the Col de la Pra and in a few minutes down to the hut, with an ascent of around 740-820 meters. Alternatively, you can reach it from Chamrousse or the Croix de Chamrousse via the lakes around the Lacs Robert in around four to five hours. The best time to visit is from June to September for hikes and easy alpine destinations and in late winter and spring for ski tours. Before each tour, current conditions, possible closures and weather developments should be checked and the refuge service contacted if necessary. The original construction of the refuge dates back to 1889; after a fire in 1919, the building was rebuilt and later extensively renovated several times, including in the early 1970s and 2004.

Rooms

In summer, the Refuge de La Pra offers 76 beds in several shared rooms. The beds are arranged as bunk beds (80 x 200 cm) in dormitories with 4 to 18 places, divided into small cabins of about 4 to 6 beds. The character corresponds to a simple, collective mountain house; early booking is obligatory, even for nights outside the operating hours. Out of consideration for the night's rest, quiet is requested in the house and on the terrace from 10 pm. There are indoor toilets, washing facilities in individual cubicles, running water, heating, electricity with sockets for charging small devices and WLAN. For the unattended period, there is a separate winter room with 18 sleeping places and a dry toilet, but without gas and without a stove; here you must bring your own stove and a warm sleeping bag. The operator points out that all waste must be taken back down into the valley. According to the operator, parts of the hut are accessible for guests with reduced mobility. Cash, French cheques and chèques-vacances are accepted as means of payment, but not bank cards.

Food and drink

During the season, a simple menu is offered at lunchtime, with the option of packed lunches to take away by prior arrangement. Dinner is served as a set menu with vegetable soup, hot main course and dessert, complemented by a range of drinks from tea and hot chocolate to juices, soft drinks, beer and wine; special dietary requirements should be specified when booking.

Public transport

There are regular buses from Grenoble to Chamrousse and connections to Revel/Freydières. From the bus to Chamrousse, you can reach either Le Recoin or the Croix de Chamrousse by cable car and from there hike over the Lacs Robert to the hut. From Revel or Freydières, walk or take a cab to the Pré Raymond parking lot, from where the marked ascent begins. Timetables and seasonal bus services should be checked in advance.

Directions

The most common ascent is from the Pré Raymond parking lot above Freydières. From there, you first follow a forest road and then a well-marked path in hairpin bends through the forest to its edge. The trail then crosses a stream and leads to the reservoir and Lac du Crozet. You circle the lake, climb up the high valley to Col de la Pra and, after a short descent of around five minutes, reach the refuge on the south side, which only becomes visible late on. Depending on your pace, you should allow around 2.5 to 3 hours for the hike, with an elevation gain of around 740 to 820 meters.

Parking

The main access is via the Pré Raymond parking lot above Freydières, which can be reached via a mountain road from Domène-Revel-Freydières. Depending on the snow conditions, in winter only the lower-lying parking lot Les Granges de Freydières is often available; from there the ascent is longer. The official information from the hut operator explicitly mentions Pré Raymond as the standard parking lot and provides information on the route that can be used depending on the season.
