The Refuge de La Lavey is located at 1797 m in the upper Vénéon valley near Saint-Christophe-en-Oisans in the Écrins massif. The FFCAM hut is the starting point for the surrounding peaks and lakes, but is currently closed for renovation work.
The Refuge de La Lavey is located at 1797 m in the upper Vallon de la Lavey, a side valley of the Vénéon near Saint-Christophe-en-Oisans in the Écrins massif. The hut belongs to the Fédération Française des Clubs Alpins et de Montagne (FFCAM) and is located in the heart of the Parc national des Écrins. It can normally be reached in around two hours via an easily accessible mountain path along the Muande torrent, starting at the hamlet of Champhorent on the road to Bérarde, with an ascent of around 380 meters. The hut is a classic base for hikers, families, climbers and alpinists and provides access to surrounding destinations such as Lac de la Muande, Lac des Fétoules, Rouies and Olan. Inside, it offers three dormitories with a total of 44 sleeping places as well as simple but cozy lounges; outside the manned period, there is a winter room with around 20 sleeping places, but without water, gas, heating or sanitary facilities. In normal years, the best time to visit is in summer between June and July, while the rest of the year is characterized by the unattended winter room. Since July 2025, however, the hut is expected to be completely closed for several seasons due to extensive renovations; during this time, no catering, overnight accommodation or emergency shelter will be available. Historically, the hut dates back to an old alpine farm, which was taken over by the Club alpin at the end of the 19th century and later rebuilt and extended several times. Regardless of the time of year: Before setting off on a tour, you should always check the latest status reports, any road closures, roadworks and the weather forecast.

Rooms

The Refuge de La Lavey has 44 sleeping places in the summer season, spread over three dormitories with mattresses, pillows and comforters. The dormitories vary in size and are allocated in such a way that families and groups of alpinists with their different wake-up times are accommodated as separately as possible. Simple lounges and a terrace offer space for eating and sitting together. There are no showers; the nearby mountain stream, which offers refreshing bathing opportunities in summer, is used for personal hygiene. Outside of the manned period, there is usually a winter room with around 20 beds in a single dormitory, equipped with mattresses and blankets, but without water, gas, heating or sanitary facilities. The hut bears the "Refuges en famille" label and is therefore particularly suitable for visits with children, as long as it is open. Payment is made on site with cash, cheques or chèques-vacances, bank or credit cards are not accepted. Electricity, simple lighting and mobile phone reception are available, and WLAN is also available during the serviced period. Due to ongoing renovations, the building is currently completely closed; reservations are not possible during this phase. The official contact for queries is the Refuge de La Lavey, 38520 Saint-Christophe-en-Oisans, telephone 07 89 05 66 71.

Food and drink

When the hut is manned, the day starts with a breakfast buffet with home-baked sourdough bread, muesli, local jams, juices and coffee. At lunchtime, hearty plates of quiche, salads from the garden, soups and a hot dish that changes daily are served. In the evening, there is a soup, a full main course with or without meat, cheese from the Bauges and a dessert. The food is cooked almost exclusively with organic and regional products; many vegetables and herbs come from the hut's vegetable garden. A particular specialty is the slowly braised lamb with home-made confit lemons and summer vegetables.

Directions

From the parking lot in the hamlet of Champhorent (around 1580 m), a marked mountain trail leads to the Refuge de La Lavey in around 2 hours and around 380 meters in altitude. First descend from the parking lot to the Vénéon, cross it on a characteristic stone arch, follow the path out of the valley on the opposite side and continue up the Vallon de la Muande until the hut appears on an alpine terrace.

Parking

The most common route by car is via Grenoble and Bourg-d'Oisans on the D530 into the Vénéon valley as far as the small hamlet of Champhorent. There are public parking spaces at an altitude of around 1580 m, directly above the Vénéon; the marked ascent to the Refuge de La Lavey starts from here. If the road is impaired, the Clôt parking lot further down the valley and shuttle buses are sometimes used, so it is worth checking the latest information from the municipality of Saint-Christophe-en-Oisans, the Parc national des Écrins or the refuge itself before setting off.
