The Refuge de la Glère is located at 2153 m above Barèges in the Pyrenees. The FFCAM hut is the starting point for tours to lakes and nearby three-thousand-metre peaks.
The Refuge de la Glère is located at 2153 m in the granite massif of the Néouvielle above Barèges in the Hautes-Pyrénées. The hut belongs to the Fédération Française des Clubs Alpins et de Montagne (FFCAM) and is managed by the CAF Lourdes-Cauterets. It stands in a pronounced lake cirque with a view of Turon de Néouvielle, Néouvielle and the Crête d'Espade. The hut is manned in the winter season from the beginning of February to the beginning of May and in the summer season from the end of May to the beginning of October; a winter room is available outside these periods. Overnight stays with or without meals and half board are offered in the serviced operation. There are several dormitories in camp form with a total of 60 beds and simple but comfortable common rooms. Hot showers, washing facilities, indoor toilets, heating, power connections and WLAN make your stay easier, as well as a small parlor for self-catering. The hut is family-friendly and suitable for groups and youth groups. Access is exclusively on foot from the Plateau du Lienz above Barèges. From the parking lot at Lienz, follow the lane or the marked trail through the Glère valley; according to the hut's information, you should allow for around 650 meters in altitude and around 2.5 hours walking time without snow. Access by private vehicles directly to the refuge is prohibited by municipal regulation. The best time for hikes and multi-day hut tours is between June and October; in winter and spring, the hut serves as a base for ski and snowshoe tours. Numerous lake tours and crossings in the Néouvielle region can be undertaken from here. Current conditions, possible closures and the weather forecast should be checked carefully before each tour. The construction of today's Refuge de la Glère dates back to 1953. It was originally built on the initiative of the French Ministry of Youth and Sport in connection with work by EDF, later transferred to the municipality of Barèges and completely renovated in 2006/2007. It was reopened in its current form in 2008 and now offers 60 beds in the manned season and around 20 beds in the winter room.

Rooms

The Refuge de la Glère offers a total of 60 beds in serviced operation, spread over several simple dormitories with mattress dormitories. The hut has running water, washing facilities, indoor toilets, showers, heating, power sockets and WLAN as well as a heated lounge. For self-catering, there is a separate small "salle hors-sac" with cooking facilities and crockery. In the unattended period, a winter room with around 20 sleeping places is available, equipped with blankets, water, cooking facilities and heating, but without service. Reservations are expressly requested and can be made both online and by telephone during the season; advance booking is practically essential for busy weekends and vacation periods. The hut is approved for school classes and youth groups and is therefore frequently used by organized groups.

Food and drink

During manned periods, the Refuge de la Glère offers dinner, breakfast and, on request, a prepared picnic; the hot evening meal is served at a fixed time. The kitchen follows a simple, mountain-oriented line with full menus, as is customary in French huts, and usually serves overnight guests on a half-board basis.

Directions

The starting point is usually the parking lot on the Plateau du Lienz above Barèges. From there, follow the piste into the Glère valley or use the marked trail that shortens the hairpin bends. The trail leads through the high valley to the first lakes and further up to the hut. Without snow, you should plan around 2.5 hours walking time and around 650 vertical meters for the ascent. Access is only possible on foot; motorized access to the refuge is prohibited for visitors.

Parking

The Refuge de la Glère itself has no parking spaces; the access road is closed to public traffic by a municipal regulation. Hikers usually leave their vehicles at the Plateau du Lienz parking lot, which can be reached via a side road above Barèges. The former forest road further into the valley is badly damaged and parking in the Lurtet or "Les deux tonnes" area is only possible in a small, undeveloped turning area and is subject to local regulations. In winter, the large Tournaboup parking lot, from where a Navette runs up to Lienz, is often used due to limited capacity.
