Refuge D'Arrémoulit
The Refuge d'Arrémoulit is located at 2,265 m in the heart of the Ossau Valley on Lac d'Arrémoulit. The CAF hut serves as a base for Palas and Balaïtous ascents.
The Refuge d'Arrémoulit is a high mountain hut of the Club Alpin Français, Pau section, at 2,265 m directly on the Lac d'Arrémoulit in the heart of the Parc national des Pyrénées in the Vallée d'Ossau (municipality of Laruns, Département Pyrénées-Atlantiques). The hut belongs to the FFCAM and is traditionally manned from the beginning of June to the end of September; after extensive renovation work since 2023, it is due to reopen for the 2026 summer season with around 44 beds, but currently (as of 2026) no overnight stays are possible. It will then serve as an important base for traverses and ascents of the Palas, Arriel and Balaïtous peaks as well as a stage on the Haute Randonnée Pyrénéenne and on multi-day round trips between the Ayous, Pombie and Arrémoulit huts. The quickest way to reach the refuge is from the mountain station of the Petit train d'Artouste above the Barrage d'Artouste: from there, a well-marked path with an elevation gain of around 300 to 400 meters leads up to the lake and the refuge in around 1¼ to 1½ hours. The longer ascent from the parking lot at Caillou de Soques on the D934 in the Ossau valley is also classic, either via the Col d'Arrious or via the famous Passage d'Orteig, which is secured with a wire rope; this involves an altitude difference of around 1,000 to 1,065 meters and takes around three to four hours. Another access point is from the south from the Spanish Valle de Tena from the La Sarra parking lot near Sallent de Gállego with an altitude difference of around 1,000 meters and a walking time of around four hours. The best time to visit is during the snow-free months from June to the end of September; during this period, the refuge is usually manned and is mainly used by experienced mountain hikers and alpinists on multi-day trips. Due to the high alpine location, the sometimes exposed passages and possible old snow fields, current conditions, possible closures and the weather forecast should always be checked carefully before each tour. The first walls of the Refuge d'Arrémoulit were built back in 1886, making it one of the oldest huts in the Pyrenees; later extensions and the ongoing general renovation have modernized the building without taking away its simple character as a classic mountain hut.

Rooms
Once the renovation is complete, the Refuge d'Arrémoulit will offer around 44 beds in simple multi-bed rooms or dormitories and will reopen as a classic CAF hut without much comfort, but with a distinct mountain hut atmosphere. Reservations will be handled centrally via the FFCAM platform; during the current construction phase, no overnight stays, including a possible winter room, will be possible. Power is supplied by solar panels, which provide basic lighting and enable emergency calls to be made, as there is generally no mobile phone reception at the house. The sanitary facilities are kept simple, although the operator has not yet published precise details of showers or other facilities. According to regional tourist offices, cash and French bank or post office cheques are accepted as means of payment, so you should always have enough cash with you to be on the safe side.Sleeping beds

Public transport
Regional buses run from Pau to the Vallée d'Ossau as far as Artouste-Fabrèges on Lac de Fabrèges. There, a cable car takes you up to Artouste station, from where the Petit train d'Artouste takes you to the mountain station above the reservoir; from here, a marked mountain trail takes you to the Refuge d'Arrémoulit in just over an hour. In the summer season, buses also connect Laruns with the Col du Pourtalet, meaning that the starting point at Caillou de Soques can also be reached by public transport.Get Timetable to destination

Directions
From the mountain station of the Petit train d'Artouste, follow the signposted path along the Lac d'Artouste and further into the valley before the path climbs in hairpin bends over boulder terrain to the Lacs and the Refuge d'Arrémoulit (approx. 3.4 km, approx. +375 m, approx. 1¼-1½ h walking time). From the roadside parking lot at Caillou de Soques on the D934, a marked national park trail leads through the Vallon d'Arrious to the Col d'Arrious and then either directly to the Lac d'Arrémoulit or via the exposed Passage d'Orteig; here you need to plan around 7.5 km, a good 1,000 m in altitude and around four hours. From the south, you can also reach the hut from the La Sarra parking lot above Sallent de Gállego in Spain, which is around 1,000 meters in altitude and takes around four hours.Parking
The main French access point is reached by driving from Pau via Laruns to Lac de Fabrèges, where there is a large public parking lot directly on the D934 at the Artouste-Fabrèges station; from here, the combination of cable car and Petit train d'Artouste starts up to the starting point of the hut ascent. Further up the valley on the D934, a few kilometers above Gabas, is the roadside parking lot at Caillou de Soques, which is the classic starting point for the ascent through the Vallon d'Arrious or via the Passage d'Orteig. On the Spanish side, another access point is the La Sarra hiking parking lot above Sallent de Gállego in the Valle de Tena.Coordinates
