The Monte Rosa Hut is located at 2883 m above the Gorner Glacier near Zermatt. The SAC hut is a modern base for tours in the Monte Rosa massif.
The Monte Rosa Hut is located at 2883 m on the Plattje rocky ridge above the Gorner and Grenz glaciers in the Monte Rosa massif near Zermatt and belongs to the Monte Rosa section of the Swiss Alpine Club. It was reopened in 2009 as a high-tech, largely energy self-sufficient hut and has since served as a modern base for high-altitude tours to Dufourspitze and other four-thousand-metre peaks in the Monte Rosa group. The classic approach begins in Zermatt, from where you take the Gornergratbahn to the Rotenboden station at 2815 meters. From there, an alpine-marked panoramic trail leads over moraines and the Gorner Glacier to the hut in around 3.5 to 4 hours, with an ascent of around 540 m and a descent of 470 m; crampons and rope protection are generally recommended for the glacier section. Alternatively, you can walk from Zermatt to Rotenboden in a good three and a half hours and only then change to the hut trail. The best time for hikers is the manned summer season from around mid-June to mid-September, while in spring, from around mid-March to mid-May, the hut is mainly used by ski tourers. Due to the glacier access and the rapidly changing conditions, you should obtain up-to-date information on the route, closures and weather before every tour and consult a mountain guide if you are unsure. The hut offers hospitality with simple, hearty mountain cuisine and half-board in the evenings, as well as a sun terrace with views of the Matterhorn, Gorner Glacier and the surrounding four-thousand-metre peaks. The first Monte Rosa hut was built in 1894-1895, was renovated in 1939/40 and finally replaced by today's striking new building, which was opened in 2009 and has since also served as a research object for pioneering energy and building technology.

Rooms

The Monte Rosa hut offers a total of 120 sleeping places and is manned during the ski touring and summer season, with overnight accommodation in shared rooms or a camp with half board. During the unattended season, there is a simple shelter with 12 beds; you must bring your own cooking utensils and bivouac equipment, mattresses and blankets are available. Overnight stays in the serviced hut are organized via an online reservation system and should be booked well in advance, as the hut is in great demand as a base for numerous high-altitude tours. Water, electricity and sanitary facilities are available in the building and the infrastructure is geared towards energy-efficient operation and economical use of resources. As in most SAC huts, the use of a hut sleeping bag is recommended for your stay.

Food and drink

When the hut is open, it offers simple yet carefully prepared mountain cuisine with homemade specialties and multi-course dinners. The offer is complemented by wines and products from the Valais, so that you can enjoy a full menu after the ascent and the tours.

Directions

From the Rotenboden station at 2815 m, follow the marked trail south below the Gornergrat and cross moraine terrain to the Gorner Glacier. Depending on your choice of route, cross the glacier or climb up its northern arm before a well-marked trail leads over slabs and boulders up to the hut at 2883 m. Depending on the conditions, the normal route across the glacier takes around 3.5 to 4 hours and involves an ascent of around 540 m. In spring, there is also a ski touring trail from Rotenboden to the hut.

Parking

Access by private vehicle is only permitted as far as Täsch, where there is a large parking garage and other official parking areas at the Matterhorn Terminal. From Täsch, a shuttle train runs at regular intervals to Zermatt, where you can change to the Gornergratbahn. Those wishing to reach the Monte Rosa Hut generally use this combination of parking in Täsch, train to Zermatt and Gornergratbahn to Rotenboden before the actual ascent to the hut begins.
