The Monte Leone Hütte SAC is located at 2,848 m in the Simplon region above the Chaltwassertälli. The former army barracks is now a base for tours on Monte Leone and Wasenhorn.
The Monte Leone Hütte SAC is located at 2848 m on the southern flank of the Wasenhorn, close to the Italian border, above the Chaltwassertälli and the Chaltwasser Pass. The elongated stone building belongs to the SAC Sommartel section and towers above the turquoise glacial lakes at the foot of the Chaltwasser glacier. The hut is usually reached from the Simplon Hospiz on the Simplon Pass on a marked mountain trail through the Chaltwassertälli; depending on the route, it takes around 2.5 to 3 hours to walk and you will have to plan for around 840 to 850 meters in altitude. The serviced season usually lasts from the end of June to the end of September, outside of this time a winter room is open. The hut offers simple hot and cold meals as well as homemade cakes, half-board with three courses and a packed lunch and tea for the next day if booked in advance. The Monte Leone Hut is the starting point for high-altitude tours on Monte Leone and Wasenhorn as well as other peaks and crossings in the direction of Alpe Veglia in Italy. Due to the alpine location without mobile phone reception, guests should carefully check the current weather situation, conditions, any closures and avalanche danger before each tour.
