The Medelserhütte SAC is located at 2524 m above Curaglia in the Surselva, between Val Plattas and Val Lavaz. The Uto hut is the base for Piz Medel and the Greina.
The Medelserhütte, Rhaeto-Romanic Camona da Medel, is located at 2524 m on the Fuorcla da Lavaz high above Curaglia in Val Medel, right at the transition from Val Plattas to Val Lavaz. The hut of the Swiss Alpine Club, Uto section, offers 55 sleeping places and a simple winter room with 10 places and is manned in summer from around mid-June to mid-October and in winter during the ski touring season from mid-February to around the end of April. Thanks to its panoramic location with views of the Medelser Glacier, the Piz Medel and the Greina plateau, it is an important base for high-altitude tours, ski tours and multi-day hikes such as the Kronenwanderung or the Greina Alta Trekking. Half-board and simple, preferably regional dishes are offered during the serviced period; organic grain from Graubünden is often used for cooking, and a home-made cake buffet is part of the hut's character. The shortest approach starts in Curaglia and takes around three and a half hours through Val Plattas to the hut; other approaches are possible from Pardatsch in Val Plattas or from Fuorns and Tenigerbad. The Medelserhütte is suitable for alpine hikers and mountaineers in summer and for ski tourers and snowshoe hikers in winter; current conditions, any closures and the weather forecast should be checked carefully before each tour. First built in 1910 as a small wooden hut, the hut was replaced by a stone building in 1934 and extended and modernized in 1984, 2006 and most recently in 2023, while deliberately retaining the original, simple character of the hut.

Rooms
The Medelserhütte at 2524 m offers 55 sleeping places in simple multi-bed rooms, plus a winter room with 10 places, which is open outside the maintenance period. As an SAC hut belonging to the Uto section, reservations are obligatory, especially at weekends and in the high season. Since the extension in 2006 and later modernizations, small rooms, family rooms and a shower are also available for guests, as well as running water, electricity from small hydroelectric power and photovoltaics and heated lounges with large panoramic windows. During the manned season, half-board is offered, payment is preferably in cash, but credit card payment is possible. Mobile phone reception is available around the hut, dogs are allowed by prior arrangement with the hut team. The winter room is equipped with a stove and simple cooking facilities and serves as emergency accommodation when the hut is unattended.
Food and drink
The cuisine at the Medelserhütte relies heavily on regional products: Organic Graubünden mountain cereals are used wherever possible, with vegetarian dishes several days a week, often supplemented with vegetables that guests bring up from the village store in Curaglia. The homemade cake buffet is a special feature of the hut and rounds off the half-board with sweet specialties.
