The Martinsmadhütte is located at 2002 m above Elm in Glarnerland in the Sardona UNESCO World Heritage Site. The SAC hut is an ideal starting point for hikes and climbing tours.
The Martinsmadhütte is a mountain hut run by the Swiss Alpine Club, Randen section, and is located at 2002 m above Elm in the canton of Glarus. Nestled between Zwölfihörnern, Laaxer Stöckli and Vorab, it stands in the middle of the Sardona Tectonic Arena, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The hut was opened in 1907 as the 100th SAC hut, in 1938 it was extended with a solid stone building and has since been carefully renovated. Today it offers around 40 beds in simple multi-bed rooms and is a typical summer hut. It is usually open all year round in July and August and at weekends in June and September; outside of these times, a small winter room is open. The hut serves as a base for high-altitude tours, alpine hikes, climbs and long-distance hiking trails such as Via Glaralpina and Segnes Trek. Half-board with a rich breakfast buffet and an evening meal with Glarus specialties, hearty dishes and homemade cakes are offered in the Stube. Children will enjoy the slackline, Tyrolienne, a nearby glacier stream and a small children's lounge. Access is usually from Elm through the Tschinglen gorge or by taking the shorter Tschinglen cable car to Tschinglenalp; from there, a marked mountain trail leads steeply up to the hut in around one and a half hours, partly secured with wire ropes. From Elm, the ascent via the gorge and alp takes around three and a half hours with a good 1000 meters of ascent. Alternatively, the ascent is possible via the Panixer Pass or from Flims/Brigels. The best time to visit is during the summer months from June to September. Current conditions, any closures and the weather forecast should be carefully checked before each tour.

Rooms

The Martinsmadhütte offers around 40 beds in simple multi-bed rooms, spread over three dormitories. The dormitories are equipped with comforters and pillows; for reasons of hygiene, it is obligatory to bring your own linen or silk sleeping bag, but these can also be hired at the hut if required. In the basement there is a shared washroom with cold water and toilets, but there is no shower - the stream directly behind the hut invites you to refresh yourself. The mountain guest room is simple and cozy, reservations are strongly recommended for overnight stays. After 10 p.m. there is a night's rest and mountain or hiking boots remain in the drying room; there are plenty of hut shoes available. A winter room with four beds is open all year round, but without water and electricity and designed for self-catering. Payment for accommodation and consumption is made in the evening, cash and credit cards are accepted; debit cards such as Maestro are also possible depending on the season and operation. Electricity is limited, so we recommend bringing your own power bank. Mobile phone reception may be limited depending on the provider, but should be taken into account for emergencies in the vicinity of the hut.

Food and drink

Half-board includes a generous breakfast buffet to fortify you before setting off. In the evening, the hut team serves a multi-course dinner with fresh Glarus specialties and simple, hearty mountain dishes. During the day, refreshing drinks, a small but hearty menu and homemade cakes with coffee are on offer, making the Martinsmadhütte a worthwhile day stop.

Directions

Many hikers start their tour in the village of Elm and climb up through the impressive Tschinglen Gorge to Tschinglenalp. This section takes around one and a half hours and quickly gains altitude before you hike across the plains of Rindermatt and Biflen along the Tschinglenbach stream. From Tschinglenalp, the actual hut trail follows, which climbs steeply at the end and is secured with ropes in several places; from here it takes another one and a half hours to reach the Martinsmadhütte. If you want to shorten the ascent, take the Tschinglen cable car from Elm and start directly at the mountain station. Longer and more alpine approaches lead to the hut via the Panixer Pass or from the Flims/Brigels area, often linked to long-distance hiking trails such as the Via Glaralpina or the Segnes Trek.

Parking

By car, drive into the Sernftal valley to Elm and follow the signs to the Tschinglenbahn valley station. There are official visitor parking spaces available there, which are shared by hut guests. From the parking lots, you can either walk into the Tschinglen gorge and on to Tschinglenalp or take the cable car up and follow the marked mountain trail to the Martinsmadhütte. There is no further access or parking facilities above the valley station or at the hut itself.
