The Leglerhütte at 2273 m is located in the Freiberg Kärpf in the Glarus Alps and belongs to the Tödi SAC section. The modern mountain hut is a central starting point for hikes and ski tours from Mettmen.
The Leglerhütte is located at 2273 m in the Freiberg Kärpf, the oldest wildlife reserve in Europe, high above the valley of Schwanden in the canton of Glarus. It is a mountain hut run by the Tödi SAC section and combines the original wooden building with a modern extension, whose terrace offers views of numerous peaks such as Chli and Gross Kärpf, Hanenstock and Bützistock. In summer, the hut is usually open from June to around mid-October and is particularly suitable for families and groups, while in winter it is open on selected weekends for ski tourers and snowshoe guests. Half-board and simple, hearty meals are on offer for overnight and day guests, supplemented by homemade desserts. The normal ascent leads from the mountain station of the Kies-Mettmen cable car via Garichtisee and Chüeboden to the hut in around 2½ hours and around 700 meters in altitude; longer variants start at Elm Ämpächli with around 3½ to 4 hours and around 1100 meters in altitude or in Betschwanden with around 5 hours walking time. The hut serves as a base for multi-day tours around the Kärpf as well as for numerous winter tours and is located in the immediate vicinity of several mountain lakes and a climbing garden on Unter Kärpf. The current conditions, avalanche bulletin, route closures and weather forecast should be checked before every tour. The hut was founded in 1901 by Captain Mathias Legler, completed in 1908 and donated to the Tödi section; extensions in 1949 and a modern extension in 2007 increased the comfort and capacity to 54 beds and provided a modern energy and sanitary infrastructure.

Rooms

The Leglerhütte offers 54 beds in several dormitories with camp beds and smaller rooms; all beds are equipped with comforters and pillows, a personal hut sleeping bag is obligatory and can be rented if required. The modern extension houses additional rooms and the sanitary facilities, while the old building contains the dining room, kitchen and traditional dormitories. A small winter room with a few sleeping places is available in a nearby shelter for unattended periods; however, it does not replace the fully serviced hut. Electricity is mainly generated by a photovoltaic system and a small combined heat and power plant and is only available to a limited extent, which is why the charging of devices should be planned with caution. There is no WLAN, but mobile phone reception is generally available. As is customary in SAC huts, slippers are obligatory, night-time rest and early morning departures are observed, and advance booking is strongly recommended for overnight stays.

Food and drink

The kitchen at the Leglerhütte serves simple, hearty mountain hut dishes such as barley soup, hut macaroni or cheese with bread, supplemented by changing daily specials. After the meal, homemade sweet delicacies tempt you, which can also be enjoyed with coffee or hot chocolate on the sun terrace.
