The Kröntenhütte is located at 1903 m in the rear Erstfeldertal valley in the canton of Uri. The SAC hut of the Gotthard section is an ideal base for hikers, climbers and mountaineers.
The Kröntenhütte is located at 1903 m north of the Krönten in the Erstfeldertal valley in the canton of Uri and belongs to the Gotthard section of the Swiss Alpine Club. The comfortable mountain hut stands in the middle of an alpine high moor and is an important starting point for hikes, climbs and high-altitude tours in the Uri Alps. It is usually open from June to September, with additional opening hours in spring and October; outside of these times, a winter room is occasionally available. A visit is particularly worthwhile in the summer months from June to September or in late spring, when the approaches are mostly free of snow. The classic approach begins at the Bodenberge in the rear Erstfeldertal. From there, the hut can be reached on marked paths in around 2.5 to 3.5 hours and with an elevation gain of around 910 meters, either on the more direct Geisspfad trail or the slightly longer route via Alp Chüeplangg and Fulensee. Many guests use public transport to Erstfeld and then take the Alpentaxi or the small cable car to Wilerli, close to the starting point. The hut serves as a base for multi-day tours, family excursions, climbing camps and high-altitude tours on the Krönten and neighboring peaks. The first hut was built in 1890 and inaugurated in the same year. Since then, the Kröntenhütte has been extended several times and extensively modernized in 2013/14. Current conditions, possible route closures and the weather forecast should be carefully checked before each tour.

Rooms

The Kröntenhütte offers around 80 beds at 1903 m in seven multi-bed rooms, all equipped with comforters and pillows. A hut sleeping bag is obligatory, but can be hired on site if required. Sockets are available in the rooms, on the first floor there are two cozy lounges with panoramic views, a drying room with Secomat and a shoe room with hut shoes; separate washrooms and toilets are located in the basement. A winter room with a simple kitchen is available outside the serviced period as soon as regular winter operations have resumed. Reservations are usually made via the SAC hut reservation system or by telephone on +41 41 880 01 22, and early booking is recommended. There is deliberately no WLAN in the hut in order to preserve the peace and quiet of the hut.

Food and drink

Most guests stay here on a half-board basis during the serviced period; this includes dinner, breakfast and a liter of marching tea. The kitchen is known for its simple, seasonal dishes using local produce and especially for its home-baked bread. A vegetarian menu is available by prior arrangement, but vegan cuisine is not possible, and special intolerances should be discussed by telephone well in advance.
