The Konkordiahütte SAC is situated at 2850 m above the Konkordiaplatz on the Aletsch Glacier. It is a base for glacier trekking and high-altitude tours in the Jungfrau-Aletsch region.
The Konkordiahütte SAC is located at 2850 m in the canton of Valais, around 200 m above the Konkordiaplatz on the Aletsch Glacier, in the middle of the Jungfrau-Aletsch UNESCO World Heritage Site. The hut belongs to the SAC Grindelwald section and, with its 155 sleeping places, is one of the most important bases in the heart of the Bernese Alps. The most popular approaches are from the Jungfraujoch and the Fiescheralp; all paths lead over the glacier. From the Jungfraujoch, it takes around 4 to 4.5 hours via Jungfraufirn and Konkordiaplatz before the long metal staircase with over 500 steps leads up to the hut. From Fiescheralp, the glacier ascent takes around 5 to 6 hours with a good 1050 meters of altitude. The hut is open in spring from mid-March to the end of May and in summer from mid-June to mid-September, when it is mainly used for multi-day glacier treks and high-altitude tours to peaks such as the Aletschhorn, Grünhorn or Äbeni Flue. As all approaches are high alpine, the condition of the glacier, closures and weather should be carefully checked before the tour and a mountain guide should be consulted if you lack experience. The origins of the hut date back to 1877; since then it has been extended and modernized several times, most recently with new sanitary facilities, two small suites and an extended staircase in response to glacier shrinkage.

Rooms

In the manned season, the Konkordiahütte offers around 155 beds, mainly in multi-bed dormitories, supplemented by two simple suites directly under the roof with a view of the Jungfrau. The last major renovations resulted in spacious dormitories, a modern catering kitchen and comfortable toilet and washing facilities, making your stay much more pleasant. The winter room in the historic Haslerhütte directly below the main hut serves as unattended emergency accommodation; there are simple beds with blankets and pillows, a wood stove, lighting and some emergency provisions, but you must bring your own food. The winter room is opened with a numerical code and offers around 20 beds. Reservations for the serviced hut and the winter room can be made via the online reservation system or by calling the hut team. Cash in CHF and major cards (excluding American Express) are accepted as means of payment, in exceptional cases also Twint or bank transfer. Thanks to the hut's own power supply, electricity and lighting are available and, according to mountain portals, mobile phone reception is available in emergencies; running water comes from collected meltwater and is not available all year round.

Food and drink

Overnight stays are usually offered with half-board during the supervised period. In the evening there is a multi-course menu with soup, main course and dessert, also vegetarian, gluten-free or lactose-free if booked in advance. For breakfast, the team serves homemade Bircher muesli, bread from the hut oven, jam, butter and mountain cheese from Saxeten; each person also receives a liter of marching tea for the day.

Public transport

The most important starting points can be easily reached by public transport. Trains run from many parts of Switzerland to Interlaken Ost, from where the Bernese Oberland Railway runs to Grindelwald Terminal or Lauterbrunnen; from there you can take the Wengernalp Railway and Jungfrau Railway or the Eiger Express and Jungfrau Railway to the Jungfraujoch. Alternatively, you can travel to Fiesch by SBB and Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn and take the aerial cableway to the car-free Fiescheralp. The actual high-alpine glacier ascent to the hut begins on foot from both the Jungfraujoch and the Fiescheralp.

Directions

From the Jungfraujoch, the normal route takes around 4 to 4.5 hours via the Jungfraufirn down to the Konkordiaplatz and on across the wide glacier surface to the foot of the metal staircase, covering around 160 meters in altitude on the ascent and considerably more on the descent before climbing the 500-plus steps to the hut. From the Fiescheralp, the ascent over the Aletsch Glacier typically takes 5 to 6 hours with a good 1050 meters of altitude, while even longer, combined glacier trails are possible from Blatten in the Lötschental or from the Fafleralp. All ascents run over crevasse-rich glaciers and require appropriate alpine equipment and experience.
