The Hüfi hut of the SAC Pilatus section is located at 2334 m in the rear Maderanertal valley above the Hüfi glacier. The serviced hut is a base for high-altitude tours to nearby three-thousand-metre peaks.
The Hüfihütte is a mountain hut run by the SAC Pilatus section in the Maderanertal at 2334 m, above the tongue of the Hüfifirn and the Hüfisee in the canton of Uri. Surrounded by Gross Düssi, Schärhorn and Clariden, it is manned in the summer season from the end of June to the end of September and serves as a base for round tours in the Maderanertal and high-altitude tours to the surrounding three-thousand-metre peaks. The hut offers half board with dinner and breakfast as well as simple meals and drinks for day guests, prepared with regional, often home-made products. The classic approach starts at the valley station of the Bristen-Golzern cable car, which can be reached by train and post bus from Erstfeld; from there, a marked mountain trail leads up in around five hours at an altitude of around 1500 meters, which can be shortened by taking an Alpine cab to Guferen. More challenging crossings from the Klausen Pass or the Planura Hut require glacier equipment and experience. Current conditions and the weather should be carefully checked before each tour. The first hut at the current location was built in 1899, the current building was built in 1937 and extensively renovated in 2018; it is owned by the Pilatus section and managed by the team led by Désirée Stalder and Daniel Scheuber.

Rooms

There are 32 beds in four rooms in the Hüfihütte, with comforters and pillows; a thin sleeping bag is obligatory. There is a toilet and a simple washroom with cool glacier water in the house, but no shower and no actual winter room. The hut is only open during the manned summer season; outside of this time, only a small boot room without cooking or heating facilities is available for emergencies. Payment is usually made in cash in CHF or EUR, card payment is possible but not always reliable, so it is advisable to have sufficient cash. Reservations can be made via the online reservation system or by calling the hut team. Dogs can stay overnight in the Holzschopf by prior arrangement, but are not allowed in the hut itself. According to tour portals, there is cell phone reception, which makes it easier to contact the rescue service or the valley in an emergency.

Food and drink

The cuisine at the Hüfihütte focuses on regional and home-made products: In addition to classic hut menus, creative vegetarian dishes, home-made cakes and spaetzli as well as Plättli with specialties from Central Switzerland are offered. Homemade drinks such as syrup or a refreshing glacier iced tea, which are particularly appreciated after the ascent, go well with this.

Directions

From the Golzernbahn valley station at 832 m, follow the marked mountain trail into the Maderanertal valley and climb out of the valley along the Chärstelenbach stream via Alp Guferen to the steeper Rimenen flank, over which the trail leads to the hut. Depending on the starting point, you will have to plan around 1500 meters in altitude and around five hours of walking time; if you take an alpine cab to Guferen, the ascent is shortened to around three hours.

Parking

For multi-day tours, the paid parking lot at the valley station of the Bristen-Golzern cable car is generally used; there are numerous parking spaces available there and the vehicle can be parked for the duration of the hut stay.
