The Gspaltenhornhütte is located at 2455 m at the very back of the Kiental valley and belongs to the Bern section of the SAC. It serves as a base for tours to the Gspaltenhorn, the Bütlasse and for crossings to neighboring huts.
The Gspaltenhornhütte is situated at 2455 m on a rocky outcrop high above the Gamchi Glacier at the very back of the Kiental valley in the canton of Bern. The mountain hut of the SAC Bern section offers 60 beds in simple dormitories and is a classic summer and alpine hut in the Jungfrau-Aletsch UNESCO World Heritage Site. Overnight stays are on a half-board basis with a simple but carefully cooked evening meal; drinks and snacks are available during the day. The hut serves as a starting point for ascents of the Gspaltenhorn and Bütlasse as well as for crossings to the Blüemlisalphütte or into the valleys via Sefinenfurgga, Hohtürli and Gamchilücke. It is usually open from mid-June to mid-October; outside of this period it remains closed, with only a small, very basic emergency room without water, electricity, heating and sanitary facilities available. The quickest ascent is from Griesalp on marked mountain trails via Gamchialp or Bundalp in around 3.5 to 4.5 hours with an ascent of around 1100 to 1240 meters; other, significantly longer routes start in Mürren or on the Schilthorn. The first hut was built in 1902 and rebuilt several times after natural and avalanche damage; the core of the current building dates back to 1953 and was extensively renovated in 2014. Current conditions, possible route closures and the weather forecast should be checked carefully before every tour.

Rooms

The Gspaltenhornhütte offers a total of 60 sleeping places in multi-bed dormitories with comforters and pillows, your own hut sleeping bag is obligatory and can be rented on site. Check-in is usually possible until around 6.15 p.m., dinner is served together at 6.30 p.m. and it is quiet at night from 10 p.m. onwards. Simple washing and toilet facilities are available, there is no shower; depending on the water level, you can wash yourself at a well in front of the hut. The water in the washrooms and toilets is not drinking water; this is served or sold at the bar. In winter there is no actual winter room, only a small emergency room without electricity, water, wood, heating or sanitary facilities. Payment is made directly at the hut; cash, SAC vouchers, major credit cards and bills for larger groups are accepted by prior arrangement. The mobile phone network is weak and only partially available on the terrace, there is no WLAN; power banks can be rented for a fee to charge devices.

Food and drink

Meals are provided on a half-board basis with a fixed evening menu consisting of soup, seasonal salad, main course and dessert; an à la carte dinner is not offered. During the day, drinks and simple dishes are served in the restaurant and on the large terrace; the team cooks vegetarian or vegan dishes and prepares packed lunches for on the go by prior arrangement.
